Prince Harry Says Being in the Spotlight ‘Destroyed’ His Mental Health

During a rare sit-down interview with late night’s James Corden, Prince Harry opened up about life as a royal and its massive impact on his mental health.

“We all know what the British press can be like,” he told Corden. “It was destroying my mental health. Really, this is toxic. So I did what every husband and every father would do. I need to get my family out of here.”

In January 2020, Harry and wife Meghan Markle publicly announced plans to step back as senior royals, choosing to split their time between the U.S. and the United Kingdom. “This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity,” the statement read.

As of 2021, the two and their one-year-old son reside in Santa Barbara, California. “We never walked away,” Harry told Corden of their decision to step down. “As far as I’m concerned, whatever decisions that are made on that side, I’ll never walk away. I’ll always be contributing. My life is public service, so wherever I am in the world, it’s going to be the same thing.”

During the interview, the Duke of Sussex also shared his thoughts on Netflix’s The Crown (a series loosely based on his own family) and FaceTimed with Markle.
