Prince Harry surprised Meghan Markle with re-designed engagement ring on anniversary

It’s been four years since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced their engagement in front of the media at Kensington Palace.

Following the couple’s happy news, all eyes were on Meghan’s engagement ring, which was made with two diamonds from Princess Diana’s collection and one specially sourced from Botswana by Prince Harry.

At the time, Harry explained: “The ring is obviously yellow gold because that's her favourite and the main stone itself I sourced from Botswana, and the little diamonds either side are from my mother's jewellery collection, to make sure that she's with us on this crazy journey together."

However, if you look at Meghan’s left hand today, you’ll see the ring looks different from the one Harry gave to her in 2017, due to the fact that Harry had it redesigned for the couple’s first wedding anniversary.

The redesign saw the ring's plain gold band replaced with a thinner micropavé one and some gems were added to celebrate the couple’s growing family.

According to the biography Finding Freedom, authors Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand write: "On May 19, 2019, Harry also surprised his wife of one year with the gift of a ring that he had created with jeweller-to-the-stars Lorraine Schwartz, a favourite of Meghan's.

"The conflict-free diamond eternity band paid homage to the family of three with Meghan's, Archie's and Harry's birthstones (peridot, emerald, and sapphire, respectively) on the underside of the ring.”

It’s not known exactly when the redesign took place, but as Meghan was unable to wear the ring during the final stages of her pregnancy, the change may have happened then.

The jeweller told the authors: "Harry wanted to make it special. He's the loveliest person ever. So romantic, so thoughtful."

The book continues: "Harry also thought to have Lorraine resize and reset Meghan's engagement ring with a new diamond band."

Harry and Meghan announced their engagement on November 27 2017 and got married just a few months later on May 19 2018 in St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle. Their children, Archie and Lilibet, followed in May 2019 and June 2021.

Meghan made a surprise appearance on the Ellen Show with Ellen Degeneres earlier this month, where she spoke about family life in Montecito, California and performed a prank on unsuspecting members of the public.
