Prince William ‘already planning his modern Coronation’ and ways it’ll be different to Charles’

Following King Charles' Coronation on 6 May, Prince William has started to think about what he'd like his own crowning to look like in the future, according to reports.

The Prince of Wales, 40, watched as his father Charles, 74, was crowned king in a historic ceremony at Westminster Abbey along with step-mother Camilla, 75, after he acceded to the throne in September 2022 following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

William has reportedly been reflecting on Charles' Coronation and it has prompted him to begin thinking about his own crowning, which he hopes will be "modern" and "relevant", according to sources.

A source told The Times: “He is really thinking, how do we make his Coronation feel most relevant in the future? He is mindful of the fact that in 20 years’ time, or whenever his time comes, how can the Coronation be modern but also unifying to the nation and the Commonwealth? I think his Coronation will look and feel quite different.”

While there's no doubt William will be keen to stick to tradition, it's believed he wants a different Coronation to his father's and is likely to leave out a ‘homage of the people’.

At King Charles' service, the congregation at Westminster were invited to swear their allegiance to the monarch as well as his 'heirs and successors', by the Archbishop of Canterbury.

However, the source claimed William isn't looking at including this in his Coronation, saying: “There is no way he will go down that route or anything like it.”

The future King's decision not to have an investiture as Prince of Wales may be a nod to how he could decide to do things in the future, with those close to William believing he is likely to break with tradition.

The source also told The Times: "You can see it in how he has taken having an investiture off the table, and his thinking on how to leave a legacy in communities rather than just going in [to] do ribbon cutting.

"You can see it in how he is running an environmental prize with Earthshot that is not just about handing cash out, but about the long-term impact globally. He is thinking about his coronation in the same way.”

William previously touched upon how he hopes to "modernise" and "develop" the Royal Family when he takes to the throne during an interview with the BBC to mark Elizabeth II's 90th birthday in 2016.

He said: “It occupies a lot of my thinking space as to how on earth you’d develop into something modern in today’s world. I think the royal family has to modernise and develop as it goes along, and it has to stay relevant. That’s the challenge for me, how do I make the royal family relevant in the next 20 years’ time?”
