Emma Thompson, 62, has spilled on the moment she cheekily asked Prince William, 38, for a “kiss” when she received her damehood in the Queen’s 2018 Birthday Honours at Buckingham Palace. The actress, who is starring alongside Emma Stone in new movie Cruella, reminisced about the moment she became a Dame during an appearance on The Jonathan Ross Show, which is set to air on Saturday.

Emma explained she’s known the Duke of Cambridge “since he was little” and was overwhelmed by how tall he was when they reunited.

She recalled: “Prince William was absolutely fantastic.

“I wrote him a fan letter afterwards.

“His face and body language, so kind and generous to every single person.

“I’ve known him since he was little really. I’ve always liked him.

“I couldn’t believe how tall he’d got.”

The actress then admitted that she was warned against going in for a kiss with the royal, as William replied to her request, “probably better not”.

She continued: “I did say, ‘I suppose I better not kiss you’ and he said, ‘Probably better not’.”

Emma went on to say the Duke was quick to shut down her questions about how he was doing, as the prestigious occasion was “about her”.

She added: “I asked him about him and he said, ‘Will you please stop talking about me, it’s about you.’

“What a nice man,” the star gushed.

It comes after Dame Emma and Emma, who plays titular villain Cruella in the Disney film, joined Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton on a Zoom call this week.

William shared that he was recently “propositioned” by an elderly woman.

The Duke made the actresses chuckle as he said: “I got propositioned by a 96-year-old lady called Betty yesterday who wanted to kiss me.

“She’s in a care home with her daughter and I said, ‘Betty, if I do that, I’m going to get slapped on the back of the head for being inappropriate…social distancing’.

“And she said, ‘I’ll have you afterwards then’. She was a right character!”

Kate interjected, and quipped: “This is what happens when I’m not around!”

Emma then joked: “I’ve got a window!”

Cruella is a prequel to Disney’s 101 Dalmatians and follows a young Estella de Vil, an aspiring fashion designer in 1970s London played by Emma Stone.

Dame Emma portrays The Baroness in Cruella, Estella’s boss and the head of a London fashion house.

The Jonathan Ross Show is on Saturday May 29 on ITV and also available on ITV Hub.
