Prince William meets Grenfell survivors and families ahead of anniversary of tragedy

Prince William has met with survivors and bereaved families of the Grenfell Tower tragedy ahead of the sixth anniversary of the fire.

As part of the visit, he also visited Queen's Park Rangers football club, which is less than a mile from the tower, to hear about the efforts they have made to support the community since the tragedy on 14 June, 2017.

The tower block caught fire trapping many of its residents inside and claiming the lives of 72 people, with an investigation into the shocking tragedy looking at the cladding scandal on tower blocks and the role of the fire service in responding to calls on the night.

Prince William, who is head of the Football Association, met with former QPR and England striker Les Ferdinand at the club at Loftus Road to hear more about support they had offered to those affected by the fire.

Events such as Game 4 Grenfell and the Grenfell Memorial Cup have involved football matches organised to benefit survivors, and William met with those who took part in and arranged the matches.

He was due to hear more about the positive impact football has had in helping people affected in the West London area close to the tower.

He also met with community and youth workers who have spent time helping Grenfell survivors with mentoring, mental health and personal development.

Prince William has previously made efforts to meet with people affected by the Grenfell fire – last year, he and wife Kate Middleton were guests at a memorial service held at the foot of Grenfell Tower and organised by Grenfell United to mark the fifth anniversary.

In June 2017, in the days after the fire which shocked the nation, William visited the site with his late grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II and in 2019 he and Kate returned to Grenfell for the launch of the National Emergencies Trust.

Earlier in May, a £150 million compensation settlement was agreed at the High Court for those affected by the Grenfell Tower disaster, with defendants in the case including the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, the London Fire Commissioner, and cladding firm Arconic.
