‘Queen Camilla is a fiercely modern feminist – Meghan wasn’t the first’

Queen Camilla's Reading Room charity has gone from strength to strength ever since it launched on Instagram in January 2021.

While reading has long been a refuge for Her Majesty, she has many other key charitable focuses which have been celebrated – and even prompted surprise – over the years.

One of these topics of interest is supporting domestic violence charities and raising the profile of disadvantaged women across the world.

Speaking exclusively to OK!, former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond explained why she believes Queen Camilla will be stunned by the success of her Reading Room charity and why her other causes have her pegged as a "fiercely modern feminist."

Speaking ahead of The Queen's Reading Room Festival which takes place at Hampton Court Palace on Sunday, June 11, Jennie said: "The Queen is absolutely passionate about reading and saw huge success when she launched her Reading Room charity on Instagram.

"She has read since she was young and loves nothing more than sitting quietly with King Charles and reading in separate corners of the same room.

"I think she has probably be surprised – and thrilled – by the success of this literary venture but she remains loyal to her other charities and causes, particularly domestic violence.

"The Queen is a fiercely modern feminist who has some radical and forward thinking ideas – Meghan was certainly not the first member of the family to claim this credential!"

Jennie then referred to what Queen Camilla said in her speech at the Women of the World Foundation’s Shameless! Festival as she was so surprised when Her Majesty said domestic violence campaigners need to get men on board to help support female sufferers.

To a packed room at the Wellcome Collection in London in 2021, the-then Duchess of Cornwall said: "We need to get the men in our lives involved in this movement. We do not, in any way, hold all men responsible for sexual violence. But we do need them all on board to tackle it."

Reading and helping the victims of domestic violence are just the tip of the iceberg for Queen's Camilla's charitable profile as she is a growing voice in everything from gender equality to raising awareness against FGM (female genital mutilation).

Jennie adds: "She has other charities and causes, and all credit to her. You don't look at Camilla who has never had a career and who was always linked in with the horsey, aristocratic crowd and think 'Oh, there walks a feminist'.

"But she absolutely is a feminist. She has stood up, first of all quite quietly, but now very noisily for women's rights and equality."
