England’s Raheem Sterling has been forced to return to the UK from the World Cup in Qatar after armed robbers broke into his house.
On Sunday, shortly before England kicked off against Senegal in the final 16, the English FA revealed that Sterling would not be involved in the upcoming game due to a “family matter.”
England went on to dominate Senegal in a match that ended 3-0, moving them forwards to face France in Saturday’s quarter-final match.
Following the triumphant win, England manager Gareth Southgate told ITV that “we’ve got to wait and see” whether the Chelsea player will return to Qatar for the rest of the competition.
“At the moment, clearly, the priority is for him to be with his family and we’re going to support him and we’re going to leave him to have as much time as he needs,” he said.
When asked whether Sterling had returned to UK shores, his manager confirmed: “He’s going home, yeah.
“I really don’t know [if he will return]. At the moment it’s a situation that he needs time with his family to deal with and I don’t want to put him under any pressure with that.
“Sometimes football isn’t the most important thing and families should come first.”
Captain Harry Kane also added: “Our thoughts are with him and his family.
“It’s a private matter but it’s never easy to see one of your team-mates and friends deal with something like that. We’ll have to take it day by day.
“I’m sure Raheem will speak to the manager and take the best decision for him an his family. That’s the most important thing. We send him our best wishes and hope to see him as soon as possible.”
Back in 2016, Jamie Vardy had a similar experience while playing for England in the Euros, which was being hosted at 10 different venues across France.
"The old bill [police] are at your house Mrs Vardy. Just being neighbourly and letting you know," a fan tweeted at Rebekah Vardy at the time, with the Wag replying, "'Thank you! Appreciate that… All sorted."
A spokesman for Leicestershire Police said: "We were called at 9:40am this morning to a report of a man and woman acting suspiciously outside a property in Melton Mowbray.
"Officers attended and carried out a search of the area. No one was ocated and no offences have been identified."
