Ryan Gosling’s co-star addresses ‘awkward’ clip of actor brushing him off

Barbie: Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling star in trailer

Simu Liu has taken to Instagram to address an “awkward” clip of his Barbie co-star Ryan Gosling brushing him off.

Sharing an image from the event where the supposed issue was spotted with his 3.1 million followers, the 34-year-old wrote: “I’d beach off with this Kenadian again in a heartbeat.”

He was making a reference to both actors coming from Canada.

Simu continued: “He is the best human in every way, especially when he jokes around with us on the carpet and on set, infecting all of us with his Kenergy

“Now let’s get back to the issues that matter like supporting our striking actors and writers fighting for fair wages!”

The post was in reference to a clip captured at the film’s press day in Canada last month, which resurfaced and went viral.

In the clip, the two Kens could be seen posing together in front of the press on the red carpet when Simu, 34, tried to slip his hand around Ryan’s, 42, waist.

The latter appeared to reject the move before Simu responded: “You don’t what – oh, it’s too tender? Fair enough,” before removing his arm from Ryan.

Fans were quick to comment on the “awkward” interaction on social media.

“Oh I’d literally never show my face again,” one user wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Whilst another user commented, “He was so mad after, like, you can see it in his face.”

And another asked the question: “Okay is it me or has Ryan Gosling come off very arrogant for this entire press tour?”

But other fans theorised that it could be that the pair were just trying to act like their Ken characters in the film.

One fan said: “I think it’s their characters playing like they hate each other cause they are in competition with each other in the movie… it’s not that deep”

Whilst another chimed in: “I feel like they are still playing their roles outside the movie. I didn’t find it weird,” followed by a laughing emoji.

The Barbie film, which was released last Friday, has received rave reviews.

Before the release, the film-makers had to defend their casting choices after social media users branded Ryan Gosling as “too old” to play the part of Ken.

Speaking to GQ magazine ahead of the release, Ryan said: “I would say, you know, if people don’t want to play with my Ken, there are many other Kens to play with, But suddenly, it’s like, ’No, we’ve cared about Ken this whole time”

The “La La Land” star concluded, “If you ever really cared about Ken, you would know that nobody cared about Ken. So your hypocrisy is exposed. This is why his story must be told.”
