The Duchess of York has opened up, sharing her joy at becoming a grandmother after the news that HRH Princess Beatrice, will be welcoming a child later this year. Sarah is already a grandmother to four-month-old August Brooksbank, the son of HRH Princess Eugenie.

I’m over the moon to have become a grandmother, naturally

In a rare interview, the Duchess of York has spoken of her partnership with the Montessori Group – a school group that emphasises the independence of a child from a young age.

Sarah Ferguson, 61, was recently appointed as Chair of International Montessori Ambassadors following a lifelong dedication to service to a wide variety of children’s charities.

The Duchess, who married Prince Andrew in 1986, often uses her social media platform to bring awareness to the causes she is passionate about and has even founded her own charity.

Following her news, Sarah opened up to Express.co.uk about her experience with Montessori education, as well as the news that she is set to welcome her second grandchild later this year.

When asked about becoming a grandmother, the Duchess said: “I’m over the moon to have become a grandmother, naturally,” however, she went on to add that the new additions to the York family were not the reason she is passionate about the education of young people.

She explained: “I have always believed in its power to transform children’s lives.

“That’s why I set up a foundation called Children in Crisis which went on to build schools in Liberia, Sierra Leone and other countries.”

Sarah continued: “That charity merged a few years ago with another one called Street Child which has carried on its work, and my new charity Sarah’s Trust has a strong focus on education.”

Currently, it’s estimated that one in five children across the globe are not in school or receiving a formal education — something that the Duchess shared her frustration about.

“I believe very strongly that every child has a right to an education, and I won’t rest while one in five children in the world still isn’t in school,” she added.

Sarah’s youngest daughter, Princess Eugenie, 31, started her education in 1992 at a Montessori nursery close to the York family home, Royal Lodge, in Windsor.

The mum-of-one attended Winfield Montessori alongside her cousin, Zenouska Mowatt, with the pair often being dropped off by the Duchess.

Sharing her experience, the Duchess said: “Eugenie started her education at a Montessori nursery in Windsor in 1992, and it gave her the very best start in life.

“It encouraged her natural curiosity and set her up for a love of learning that I’m delighted to say that she still has today.”

Leonor Stjepic, CEO of the Montessori Group, states that the Montessori method of education is a “child-led approach to learning”.

She added: “It’s an accessible approach that fosters fundamental skills, such as independence, creativity, curiosity, confidence, problem-solving and leadership, that last the child’s whole life.”
