Shawn Mendes recently dropped another song about his ex, Camila Cabello. What does she think about the music he’s written about her since their breakup? Mendes revealed that he runs his songs by his ex before releasing them. Here’s what Mendes said about his “really honest” relationship with Cabello after their split.
Shawn Mendes said he doesn’t release songs about his ex Camila Cabello without her permission amid the release of ‘When You’re Gone’
Singer Shawn Mendes recently released a new song about his breakup with Camila Cabello titled “When You’re Gone.” In an interview with E! News, Mendes was asked if he was nervous about “certain someone” hearing the track.
“Camila heard this song months ago,” Mendes revealed, smiling. “So, we have a really honest relationship. I would never really put a song out about her before she would hear it.”
Mendes was then asked if he would still release a song if Cabello said she didn’t want him to. He answered, “Probably not. I mean, it depends on like, if it was like, truly, like, not fair to put out. Then, of course.” He revealed that he had written other songs that he decided on his own not to release. “And there have been songs that I wrote that I’m like, OK, maybe I shouldn’t put this out.”
Mendes continued to say that he and Cabello know each other well and support one another’s art. “She knows me, and I know her, and I think ultimately we both are writers, and we both know what it is to make music and what the bigger picture of making art is,” he explained. “And we’re supportive of that, always.”
Shawn Mendes has released 2 singles since his breakup with Camila Cabello; ‘It’ll Be Okay’ and ‘When You’re Gone’
Camile Cabello and Shawn Mendes announced their breakup after two years of dating in November 2021. On Dec. 1, two weeks after the former couple shared the news of their separation, Mendes released the single, “It’ll Be Okay.”
The moody breakup track includes the lyrics, “I start to imagine a world where we don’t collide/It’s making me sick but we’ll heal and the sun will rise.” Mendes also dropped some clues about the breakup. Lyrics like, “If you tell me you’re leaving, I’ll make it easy,” made it sound like Cabello was the one to initiate the split.
In his new track, “When You’re Gone,” Mendes talks about life without Cabello. “You never know how good you have it, oh/Until you’re staring at a picture of the only girl that matters, aah,” he sang. “It’s hard for me to let go of you/So, I’m just tryna hold on, hold on/I don’t wanna know what it’s like when you’re gone/I don’t wanna move on.”
The singer previously shared that he hates being on his own after the breakup
Shawn Mendes opened up about being single for the first time in years after his breakup with Camila Cabello. On Mar. 18, the singer posted a video on Instagram telling fans about his feelings.
“You don’t realize … when you’re breaking up with someone and you like think it’s the right thing, you don’t realize all the s*** that comes after it,” Mendes said while occasionally playing a few chords on a piano. “Which is like, who do I call when I’m like in a panic attack, who do I call when I’m like f***ing on the edge.”
He shared that he hates being alone now that he’s single. “And I think that’s the reality that kind of hit me, I was like, oh, I’m on my own now,” Mendes said. “Now I feel like, finally I’m actually on my own and I hate that. That’s my reality, you know?”
