Shirley Ballas, 61, has been hit with strong criticism since Strictly Come Dancing started, for her comments to Matt Goss over his performances, as well as being accused of “sexist” remarks on the show, which she has denied. This weekend was no different, with the head judge having taken to Twitter to hit back at BBC viewers with a very defiant remark.
But enjoy the show and have a wonderful week!
Shirley Ballas
Shirley has been hit with heavy criticism over her appearance during Saturday night’s live show, with one social media saying she looked like “mutton dressed as a lamb”.
However, Shirley made sure not to let the hateful comments get to her, as she replied to several with a bold jibe.
Social media user Ruby_j07 shared a picture of Shirley from Saturday’s show, alongside a picture of Nanny Plum from the children’s show Ben & Holly’s Little Kingdom.
She captioned the post: “Shirley Ballas is serving nanny plum tonight #strictlycomedancing #strictly #shirleyballas.” (sic)
Social media user Patrici26413147 replied: “She is such a false, and fake person. Mutton dressed as lamb thinks she’s the best thing since sliced bread.”
Choosing to rise above the insult, Shirley responded in view of her 81,400 Twitter followers: “Sorry you feel like this. Love that expression mutton dressed as lamb is very northern. Anyway, Lovely Sunday you made me smile.”
This was not the only Twitter message Shirley replied to at the weekend, as she hit out at one Twitter user for criticising her laugh.
Nigelll77 said: “Shirley has a lovely false laugh, hairdo last week nice, sorry but not so good last night.”
Shirley took aboard the criticism, responding: “Thanks Nigel. Have a great day.”
Therealdavewest added: “I’d vote to have you replaced.”
The head judge simply quipped: “Ok. But enjoy the show and have a wonderful week.”
This comes as the professional ballroom dancer and Latin dance champion has been heavily criticised, as some Strictly viewers believe she tends to favour male contestants, and is too harsh on the female celebs in the competition.
Shirley also found herself at the centre of a new fix row, as some Twitter trolls demanded she should be sacked over her opinion of this series’ celebrity contestants.
The head judge reiterated on Loose Women last week that she “does not have a bad bone” in her body, as she called out the “hurtful” remarks.
“The backlash and trolling has been a lot,” Shirley told the Loose Women panel.
“Saturdays are the ultimate job. I do read everything. I know people say not to but I think it’s quite important. I like to think I’ve helped so many people over the years, people with mental health issues.
“But it is really hurtful, some of the language is so explicit I couldn’t even retweet it, it’s unfathomable.”
Shirley has also been criticised for her heavy opinions directed towards Matt Goss and Ellie Taylor in recent weeks.
Body language expert Darren Stanton told Express.co.uk: “Shirley has noticeably changed her judging style already in this series.
“She is always fairly upbeat and positive, but we saw her giving some really critical responses and feedback to certain contestants, especially Matt Goss and Ellie Taylor.
“When she delivered her feedback to Matt, she came down on him heavily, prompting Matt to be taken aback.
“His eyes were wide and his face flashed an expression of disbelief before conveying disappointment.”
