This story sounds like it’s ripped straight from the script of the Hitchcock thriller Psycho, but it actually happened — just this year!
A man was shocked beyond belief when he visited his estranged brother-in-law’s home in the small town of Radlin, Poland in February. First off, the 76-year-old man, referred to by Polish authorities only as Marian L., was seen wandering around outside of his home “looking mad.” The concerned brother-in-law decided to call emergency medical services just based on that. He had no idea how horrific things would get…
Once paramedics arrived, they entered the home of the elderly man and were met with a sight none of them could believe. Atop a pile of newspapers on the couch in the living room, they found a mummified corpse! The dates on the newspapers under her gave a grim insight into how long the body had been there — some of them were dated all the way back to 2009!
Seriously WTF…
Local police spokeswoman Małgorzata Koniarska explained in a statement:
“We received a report in connection with the disclosure of the body from a family member of the owner of the apartment. The policemen went to Ul. Rogozina in Radlin. In the part of the house belonging to an elderly man, a mummified corpse was discovered.”
Mummified… Wow…
Joanna Smorczewska of the District Prosecutor’s Office then confirmed in a statement that the identity of the body had been discovered through DNA testing — leaving the town of Radlin in complete shock:
“According to the DNA content, the mummified corpse is that of a woman, Jadwiga L., who died in January 2010, and thus Marian L.’s mother.”
Yep. It was his mummy. In both ways. But how did he get her body?? Smorczewska continued:
“It was established that the grave of Jadwiga L., where she was buried on January 16, 2010, remains empty. It is likely that the man dug up the mother’s body immediately after its burial and then mummified it and the body has remained in this house since 2010.”
This man had dug up his mother’s dead body and then kept it sitting on his couch for over a decade!
Not only that, police have theorized Marian, who only lives about 0.2 miles from the cemetery, took his mom’s corpse home on his bicycle! He must’ve been so grief-stricken after her death he resorted to such wild measures…
Head of the DPO Marcin Felsztyński spoke out about the situation and claimed the man used chemicals to mummify the body:
“The smell of mothballs was noticeable.”
The entire neighborhood was left dumbfounded at the discovery. Marian’s neighbors claimed he was a “hermit” — they didn’t even know his name! They certainly didn’t suspect him of hiding a corpse! One neighbor said to a local outlet:
“He always left the house at night, took his bike and went into the unknown.”
Where else might he have ridden his bike?? We shudder to think…
Marian was charged with a crime — desecration of a corpse — although it’s unclear what his sentence will be. As for his mother, Jadwiga will be reburied and laid to rest, hopefully permanently this time.
Definitely a story you don’t hear every day! Reactions, Perezcious readers?
