Sophie Wessex wipes away tears as ‘Queen’s favourite daughter-in-law’ says goodbye

Sophie, Countess of Wessex looked emotional as she attended her beloved mother-in-law, Queen Elizabeth II's, funeral on Monday.

The 57 year old could be seen wiping tears from her eyes at Westminster Abbey, where she was sat alongside her husband, Prince Edward, 58, and the Prince and Princess of Wales, who also both looked emotional.

Sophie arrived alongside Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, earlier on in the day, with the duo making their way to Westminster via car while their husbands arrived on foot.

Mum-of-two Sophie looked downcast as she attended her mother-in-law's State Funeral, following her death on Thursday 8 September at Balmoral Castle.


After marrying the Queen’s youngest son, Prince Edward, back in 1999, Sophie struck up an exceptionally close relationship with Her Majesty andregularly made the 10-mile trip to visit the monarch at her home in Windsor.

What’s more, following the death of Prince Philip last year,Sophie is said to have become “a rock” for the Queen during what was an immense time of personal loss.

Speaking of the relationship, a royal source toldThe Mirror that she had been a "tremendous source of comfort to the Queen."

They added: "Sophie cherishes her relationship with the Queen and not only appreciates her guidance and wisdom throughout her own life, she is very protective of her."

"Their bond is very like a mother and daughter and the feeling of love and respect is quite mutual. It is very special."

Following the news of Her Majesty’s passing on 8 September, the Countess of Wessex has paid tribute to the monarch by attending a handful of memorial services in honour of the Queen.

Despite her own grief, Sophie appears to have become a source of comfort for her family members and was pictured comfortingPrincess Anne as she watchedQueen Elizabeth II's coffin being carried into the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh last week.

As soldiers from the Royal Regiment of Scotland carried the coffin to the Palace's Throne Room, Sophie was seen placing her hand on the Princess Royal's back in a supportive gesture as thecoffin arrived after a six-hour drive from Balmoral.
