Kamala Lopez will be well known by many fans for her role as Tincoo on Star Trek Voyager. However, aside from her part in the series, Kamala is also known for her campaigning work against gender-based violence.

In an exclusive chat with Express.co.uk, Kamala opened up about the work she’s been doing with Equal Means Equal.

The actor was part of the group which helped complete the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA).

This was a change made to the US Constitution, which guaranteed equal rights for all American citizens, regardless of sex.

Speaking about her work on this, Kamala explained: “It actually started in 2009.

“I found out that women didn’t have equal rights in the United States, which I was, ‘Wait what?’”

This was when the star started working with the campaign on this, carrying on the work that began in the early 1900s.

She and other campaigners finally managed to get it passed in 2020, which Kamala admitted was a huge relief.

“We got it done, January 27, 2020 – it’s under a century,” she added.

However, Kamala has admitted her frustrations have not gone away after this win.

She opened up about living in America feeling “dangerous” for women, as well as how much hasn’t changed under Joe Biden.

Speaking back in December, she opened up about the battle to overturn Roe vs Wade in the Supreme Court.

Kamala said: “Right now the United States is in a really dangerous moment.

“And it will be the first instance in US history where we see a regression of rights as opposed to a progression of rights.

“And I think it’s a good opportunity for women to sort of lift the veil that is presently over their eyes and look at the fact that discrimination against women is so endemic and so rampant.

“It’s so in the bones of the society that we are now going to go ahead and go backwards.”

The star went on to share her frustration towards Biden adding: “Women fought like demons to get Biden and Harris in office, partially because of their stance on women’s rights and how reportedly egalitarian and feminists, they were.

“In fact, ERA is in both of their party platforms.

“They ran on it, then 46 million women got them in office and did they do anything to remove what Trump had done?

“What Trump did was when the ERA got ratified, he immediately blocked it from being adopted.”

Kamala added how this left their campaign in “limbo” as the amendment had not been published by the US archivist.

She added: “The Biden administration when it comes to women, they’re all the same.

“They just want to keep me in power, stay in power and make money and they make money off of women.”

However, now, Biden has issued a statement on the ERA, reiterating his support for it.

On January 27, he said: “Today, as the House announces a resolution on the Equal Rights Amendment, I once again want to express my support for the ERA loudly and clearly.

“I have been a strong supporter of the ERA ever since I first ran for the Senate as a 29-year-old.

“We must recognise the clear will of the American people and definitively enshrine the principle of gender equality in the Constitution.”
