Stormzy reflects on ‘painful’ split from Love Island’s Maya Jama and admits ‘mistakes’

Stormzy has opened up about his relationship with ex-girlfriend Maya Jama, admitting that he “made a mistake” during the couple’s time together.

TV presenter Maya, 28 – who has just landed ahuge gig as the new presenterof Love Island – and the successful rapper met in the early days of building their careers in the entertainment industry and soon started a relationship.

They dated between 2016 and 2020, with Maya later moving on and getting engaged to NBA star Ben Simmons. Though the pair have since split.

And in an upcoming interview with Louis Theroux, Stormzy, 29, opens up on the couple’s devastating break-up, saying that he doesn’t “want to feel like that again”.

He said: “My break-up, that was probably the biggest catalyst for growth as a man.

“It was like, OK, you made a mistake and you lose someone you loved, someone you cared for, someone who is special to you.

“That’s probably the biggest loss a man can have, isn’t it? Away from someone passing away, that’s the biggest loss you can have.

“The whole f***ing palaver that surrounded that situation, do you know what I mean? There were other things in terms of mistakes I’d made.

“I didn’t do what a man should do to fully appreciate love, and care for his woman.”

Stormzy was speaking to documentary marker Louis as part of his new series which airs on BBC2 next week, during which the presenter also speaks to stars Rita Ora and Dame Judi Dench.

Opening up to Louis about the break-up, Stormzy added: “Long story short, I learned that if I don’t want to feel like that again, and if I believe that God will bless me again with an amazing woman and a family and marriage and all of that kind of thing, I have to do all the necessary work to never be in that situation again.”

Maya Jama was confirmed as the new host of Love Island following the departure of previous host Laura Whitmore.

She will make her debut as host as the new ninth series returns in early 2023.

Speaking about her upcoming presenting gig, Maya said in a statement: “I’ve always been such a massive Love Island fan and I’m so excited to be hosting one of the nation’s favourite shows! I can’t wait to get into the Villa to meet all of the Islanders.”

Director of ITV Reality Programming and Acquisitions and Controller, Paul Mortimer said: “Finding a new host to follow the wonderful Laura Whitmore was never going to be easy. In Maya Jama though, we have another high profile fan of the show who’ll be a great addition to the Love Island family.

“Cool, charming and charismatic, I speak for us all when I say Maya will also bring a unique presenting style to the show, as did Laura and, of course, the very much missed Caroline Flack. We’re very pleased to have her on board.”
