Jesse Armstrong, 51, was picking up the Emmy’s top award for the Best Drama Series, when he joked it was a big week for “successions” at the award ceremony on Monday night. The British creator and writer of the hit HBO television series Succession could not resist taking a cheeky swipe at King Charles III after the royal took the throne following Queen Elizabeth II’s death.

Jesse referenced King Charles automatically taking over the British throne following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth.

The writer made a pointed remark he “a bit more voting was involved” in Succession winning their Emmy than King Charles’s accession to the throne.

His comments come as Succession was named Best Drama Series, an award the HBO show had won in 2020 before the Covid-19 pandemic disrupted its production schedule.

The show, which secured four trophies overall, tells the story of the wealthy and back-stabbing Roy family as members jockey for power.

After he scooped the coveted prize, Jesse said: “Big week for Succession. New king in the UK this week for us. Evidently, a little more voting involved in our winning than Prince Charles.”

Actor Brian Cox then chimed in with: “Keep it royalist, keep it royalist!”

Jesse continued: “I’m not saying that we’re more legitimate in our position than he is, we’ll leave that to our people. We are incredibly grateful to have this, it’s a wonderful honor. This group is extraordinary. It’s a team effort.”

The Succession creator is no stranger to causing a stir during his acceptance speeches.

In 2020, Jesse slammed Donald Trump and Boris Johnson for their “crummy” responses to the coronavirus pandemic as he accepted an Emmy for the hit HBO series.

In the last speech of the night, he berated the US and UK leaders for their “crummy and uncoordinated” handling of Covid-19.

He also took aim at “all the nationalists and quasi-nationalist governments in the world”.

Succession, which is now in the process of filming the fourth season, follows the Roy family, a media mogul dynasty struggling to cope with patriarch Logan’s decision to step back from their TV and entertainment empire.

Meanwhile, Charles III was formally proclaimed Britain’s new king by the Accession Council on Saturday in a history-laden ceremony following the death of his mother Queen Elizabeth II.

Saturday’s ceremony marked his formal declaration and oath taking at St. James’s Palace in London.

Charles, 73, now King Charles, has been next in line to the throne for seven decades – by a distance the longest wait in the history of the British monarchy.

The prospect of the Queen’s death has always been considered a matter of great private sadness.

On Monday, with Camilla, the Queen Consort by his side, the new King looked emotional upon hearing “God Save the King” sung in person for the first time.

King Charles III headed to Parliament on Monday to receive the condolences of the Commons and the Lords in the same hall where the Queen will lie in state from Wednesday.

After the new monarch addressed Parliament for the first time and the Speaker of the House of Lords pledged his loyalty to Charles, those in attendance at Westminster Hall gathered to sing the new version of the national anthem.

King Charles III is set to travel to Northern Ireland today ahead of the late Queen’s coffin leaving London.
