Susie Dent: Countdown star ‘takes aim at government’ with ‘appropriate’ sly swipe

Steph McGovern challenges Susie Dent to a game of ‘word up’

Susie Dent, 56, treats her lucky 674.7K Twitter followers to a daily ‘word of the day’ trivia but on Thursday, fans believed she had an ulterior motive behind the very “relevant” word she chose. Crowing her the “queen of shady insults”, many were left in hysterics as they made the connection between Susie’s word and Health Secretary Matt Hancock.

Word of the day is ‘circumlocutionist’: one who consistently speaks in a roundabout way in order to avoid addressing a question directly

Mr Hancock’s latest interview went viral, after he appeared on Good Morning Britain and was grilled by Piers Morgan over the inadequate food parcels sent to families who are eligible for free school meals during lockdown.

It comes after pictures went viral of the scarce food packages were posted online by a mother, and infuriated people across the nation.

Following massive backlash and a campaign led by 23-year-old Manchester United footballer Marcus Rashford, vouchers have been reintroduced from Monday as national lockdown continues.

But viewers were in uproar after Mr Hancock avoided answering whether or not he “regretted” not backing the school meal voucher scheme in the first place, despite constant pressure from the presenter.

So, with the nation seething, Susie’s word of the day seemed a rather fitting choice to many, despite there being no confirmation about the convenient link.

She wrote: “Word of the day is ‘circumlocutionist’: one who consistently speaks in a roundabout way in order to avoid addressing a question directly.”

It didn’t take long before fans figured out that she might be referring to the government minister.

One wondered: “Is the question @MattHancock Susie?”

Another agreed: “Also a Hancocky word. (Not sure this works as well).”

“I think it’s Hancock and his answer to ‘do you regret voting against food provisions for school children,'” said a third.

Others praised the lexicographer for her wit and sarcastic tone, one that many found favourable given the circumstances.

“I’ve just discovered @susie_dent ‘s Word of the Day tweets and that’s the best scrolling I’ve done for a while,” one said.

A second added: “I @susie_dent’s ability to identify appropriate and little-known words which sum up the mood of the nation.”

“Everyone is in love with Susie Dent, yes? Not just me?” wrote a third.

A fourth agreed: “Hands up if you love Susie Dent.”

A fifth joked: “Have a thing for Susie Dent me.”

“As always @susie_dent has her finger on the nation’s pulse and pinpoints what many are thinking, but we just can’t articulate it with the single word flair that she can!#WordOfTheDay#WordPerfect,” a fifth noted.

“Susie Dent is shady in the most exquisite manner,” a sixth giggled.

Someone else dubbed her the “Minister of Shade”, but the Countdown host has yet to address whether fans are correct with their insinuation.
