Famous actor Christopher Biggins appeared on the podcast White Wine Question Time with Kate Thornton today, where he ruminated on a number of celebrity encounters he has had over the years. The star recalled one encounter with Princess Diana, whom he described as “extraordinary and sadly missed.”
The I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! winner explained how his friendship with musical theatre sensation Liza Minnelli had led to a meeting with the late Princess of Wales.
He recalled how Liza had once invited him to watch her perform at the Royal Albert Hall, asking him to accompany “a girlfriend of hers” to the live show.
However, the actor, who has been in showbusiness for more than 50 years, could never have guessed who he would be spending the evening with.
He said: “I went to the dressing room [at the Albert Hall], and we’re laughing and having a drink, a glass of wine or something.
“Then, suddenly, the door goes, and I go and open it. And standing there is Princess Diana, who is my date for the evening.
“So we all have a drink. And then they say to me: ‘Look, you can’t go in with the lights up. So we will dim the lights in the auditorium and then you’ll be taken to your seats on the front row of the stalls.
“So we were standing there for about five minutes, and I’d met her once or twice before, but this was on a very personal level.
Biggins went on to share Diana’s emotional admission about her two sons, Prince William and Prince Harry.
“And I said to her: ‘I’ve just seen that wonderful picture of you and your boys on Britannia. You have your arms outstretched and kneeling down and they’re running towards you. It’s the most wonderful picture.’
“She said: ‘Well, you’ve got to remember that they’re the most important things in my life.’ And that said a lot.
“Then of course, it became just the worst tragedy ever. She still is one of the most glamorous women ever. She’s extraordinary and sadly missed.”
Diana died on August 31, 1997 after she was in a car that crashed in the Pont de l’Alma tunnel in Paris, France.
