Jay Blades hopped onto his official Twitter account on Friday to thank his fans for their support behind his BBC documentary, Jay Blades Learning to Read at 51. The episode aired on Wednesday and received many positive reactions from viewers as The Repair Shop presenter challenged himself to improve his literacy skills.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart

It comes after Jay was diagnosed with dyslexia as a child.

He left school with no qualifications other than having built up a reputation for being a great fighter, in his own words.

The show tackled a range of topics, further diving into the research findings which suggest that over a quarter of all children in England leave primary school unable to read at the expected level.

The BBC documentary pointed out that more than eight million adults in the UK struggle with illiteracy, with half of all prisoners unable to read.

Dyslexia is a common learning difficulty prone to cause problems with spelling, writing and reading.

Taking to Twitter to thank his fans for their support in watching and leaving positive comments about the show on social media, Jay expressed his gratitude in a video.

“Thank you from the bottom of my heart,” he said.

“All of the comments that I’ve received with regards to the documentary has been unbelievable.

“I’ll tell you what, I’m a little overwhelmed.

“You guys have been so kind.”

He continued: “I know the documentary has potentially touched 80 million people in this country who are affected by dyslexia or unable to read that well.”

The Londoner went on to shed light on his upcoming projects.

Towards the end of the clip, Jay briefly explained how he hoped to find ways in which viewers can reach out and get the help they need.

He didn’t elaborate too much on the subject before stressing his gratitude once more to those who his BBC project had touched.

Jay continued: “Thank you, thank you, thank you.

“Have a great weekend.”

Ahead of the documentary’s premiere on Wednesday, Jay opened up about his struggle with dyslexia during an interview on ITV’s Lorraine.

During their chat, he remembered how a teacher at his primary school had told him he wouldn’t amount to anything in life because of his dyslexia diagnosis.

Speaking of his former teacher’s harsh words, he said: “Then he just looked behind me, and I didn’t get a chance to sit down in the chair, it was just like, ‘ok cool,’ and that was it.”

“And look at you now, on one of the best shows on telly, you know how much I love The Repair Shop.”

Learning To Read at 51 can now be streamed on BBC’s iPlayer.
