The Wanted star Max George, 32, has opened up about his stint on the 18th series of Strictly Come Dancing last year, which saw him leave in the fourth week. In an exclusive interview with Express.co.uk, the singer, who was partnered with Australian dancer Diane Buswell, shared his “relief” at leaving the dance show early, after being parted from his family for four months due to a hectic work schedule.

Speaking about his Strictly stint, Max revealed that he was glad to have left when he did, as ahead of filming he was shooting a film which saw him away from his family for months on end.

The budding actor told how he faced an extended period of time away from his family due to Covid restrictions, which meant they couldn’t visit him.

While he was working, Max said that coronavirus rules and restrictions saw him parted from his girlfriend Stacey Giggs.

He said: “The fact that she was in lockdown, she couldn’t come down and see me, wasn’t allowed on the film set, so that was tough but we got through it.”

After shooting the film, Max headed straight to the dancefloor in a bid to win the coveted Glitterball trophy.

But despite his best efforts, The Wanted singer and his flame-haired partner left in the fourth week.

Addressing his stint on the dance competition, Max said: “I really enjoyed it, I was happy to come home when I did, because I’d been shooting my film just before it so I ended up being away for four months.”

“I was kind of happy, there were so many better dancers than me who were there, so I would have been completely out of my depths if I’d gone on much longer.”

The singer added that after performing on the show’s Movie Week, he was ready to go home.

“After doing the Simpsons dance I was kind of happy then, I was like that was so fun to do,” he said.

“I mean obviously if I got through I would have enjoyed it, but when I was sent home I was just like, ‘You know what, I’m buzzing to get back.”

Max went on to brand it a “relief” to be back home after facing a long time away from his family.

“I remember walking through my doors at home and it was just a huge relief to be back.

“So I really did enjoy it but I was definitely ready for home,” he explained.

Ahead of his Strictly gig, the former Preston North End football player’s world was turned upside down upon hearing the devastating news of Tom Parker’s brain tumour diagnosis.

The father-of-two was diagnosed with an “inoperable” brain tumour in October last year after suffering a seizure three months earlier and has since shared his battle with the disease on his social media pages.

Giving an update on his friend, Max added that he is “doing great”: “Tom’s so positive and he’s defying all odds with how he’s responded to treatment, so he’s doing really really well, we’re all mega positive now.”

Speaking about his new presenting gig on Hits Radio, Max stated: “The show itself is just playing songs to get people up for the weekend and playing songs that are quite nostalgic.

“It’s just a proper warm up for the weekend and I love that, it really puts me in the mood to go out with my mates. If I can get the listeners feeling the same then I’ve done my job.”

Max George presents Friday Night Hits on Hits Radio every Friday from 7-10pm on hitsradio.co.uk.
