This Outer Banks<\/em> Theory Suggests The Answer Is Right Under Everyone\u2019s Nose

Outer Banks spoilers follow.

Season two’s big finale shocker was that–SPOILER ALERT–John B’s father is still alive and kicking, after all.

With the Pogues stranded on a deserted island, nemesis Carla was in search of the Shroud of Turin–a mysterious missing cloth (unlike the 1m x 4.5m Shroud of Turin that’s in, y’know, Turin), which was supposed to be hidden in the golden Cross of Santo Domingo. Of course, this was snatched from the gang by the Camerons, but it so far doesn’t seem to have been home to the highly sought-after shroud.

At the very end of Outer Banks season two, Carla came face-to-face with John B’s dad who just so happens to know where it is. He then promised to help track it down, in exchange for her agreement to help his son and his friends.

The continued hunt for the Shroud of Turin is therefore expected to play a pretty important role in Outer Banks season three. But a new theory could point to the possibility that it’s already in the possession of one of the main characters.

Shared on Reddit by u/Sri-Lankan-Lad, the theory suggests that John B has unwittingly had it all along. In fact, that necktie that he’s been wearing? It’s actually the artifact that everyone’s searching for.

The idea points to the fact that John B’s fashion accessory was actually a gift from his father, who he still assumes to be dead. With the knowledge that John B’s old man not only knows about the shroud, but also seems to be able to locate it as part of a deal he’s struck with Carla, it does seem plausible.

What’s more, the legendary object is said to boast healing powers. According to its own mythology, the shroud can “cure the sick of any malady” with nothing more than a touch.

The theory also leans into this, pointing to the time that John B was bitten by an alligator (no biggie, just one of the gang’s many near-death experiences).

“I have a feeling that the necktie was part of the shroud because if the legend is true, his leg really did get healed because after a while he was fine to run, walk and even jump over walls,” it reads.

Of course, the Pogues have been able to escape all manner of scrapes and scenarios that really and truly should have been fatal. But is this really down to a bandana that sits around John B’s neck?

Some have pointed out that his necktie was used to stop the bleeding after Sheriff Peterkin was shot by Rafe, but she went on to die, poking a rather large whole in the theory.

Moreover, the cast themselves have recently mused about the possibility of having hidden superpowers–well, that would be one way to keep cheating death, right?

“It’s funny, we’ve joked about the Pogues teaming up with the Guardians of the Galaxy and Star-Lord helping the Pogues,” Chase Stokes, who plays John B in the Netflix series, told EW recently.

“It’s pretty crazy, obviously we’re playing in a fictional world, so you mess with that a little bit. But these kids are relentless. It’s like they get punched in the face and 90 percent of people would be like, ‘I’m going to take four days off of work to recuperate from this,’ but the Pogues are like just going to rub some dirt on it and put a little salt in our cut and keep moving forward.”

Well, whatever it is, it’s working out for them. Even if they’re stuck on the self-named island of Poguelandia, they’re still alive–shroud or no shroud–for now.
