At the time, The Voice UK coach Sir Tom Jones, 80, was married to his childhood sweetheart Linda, who died following a short battle with cancer in 2016. The Supremes star Mary Wilson died suddenly aged 76 this week. In unearthed interviews, the singer said she fell in love with Tom and didn’t see their fling as a “mistake”, speaking out years later.

She also said she didn’t realise he was married when it began.
In her 1986 best-selling memoir Dreamgirl: My Life As A Supreme, she said of her fling with Tom: “He had other girls – I was just one of them – but I loved him.
“He broke my heart, we had to quit. He was married and it couldn’t go on.”
In an interview with The Times in 2019, she said the affair “wasn’t the nicest thing to do”.
The singer commented: “When you’re young, you make mistakes. But things are what they are.
“I don’t see my affair with Tom Jones as a mistake, not really.
“As an adult, I can look back and see that he was married and say, ‘That wasn’t the nicest thing you could do,’ but when you fall in love, you don’t always see those things.”
In 1974, she married The Supremes’ road manager Pedro Ferrer, who she shares three children with.
Twenty years later, their 14-year-old son Rafael died in a car accident.
Tom married his childhood sweetheart Melinda Trenchard in 1957.
In the biography Tom Jones: The Life by Sean Smith, his former publicist Chris Hutchins shared details on Linda’s reaction to his affair with Mary.
After Tom returned to the UK to perform at Bournemouth’s Winter Gardens, The Supremes singer reportedly flew over to see him.
The book stated Linda found out about Mary’s visit and went over to “sort him out”.

“They got Mary out and then went around and removed every trace of her,” Chris recalled.
“Linda came in and said, ‘Where is that woman?’ and Tom said, ‘I don’t know what you’re talking about’. And she said, ‘Mary Wilson, she’s been here’.”
Tom’s wife then found an uneaten meal in the oven and queried Tom about who cooked it.
Chris said the singer tried to to pin it on his assistant before finally owning up to the affair.
Linda then allegedly told him: “You’d better straighten it out, because you won’t be able to do anything without your balls.”
Chris added: “He told me the next day that they were lying there and they had just made love and Linda started crying.
“And she said, ‘When I think that b***h has been lying on these sheets’.”
In 2012, The Telegraph said Tom confessed to bedding up to 250 at the height of his fame.
Three years on he detailed his wife’s reaction to her finding out about his affair with Miss World Majorie Wallace.
“She stood there and took it. She chinned me. She punched and shouted.”
He added he has no regrets about his indefinitely, adding to Sunday Times Magazine: “I never hurt anybody, it never backfired on me and my marriage is solid.”
The Voice continues tonight at 8.30pm on ITV.
