Piers Morgan, 56, took to Twitter to share a snap of Tom Daley, 27, knitting during the women’s springboard diving final yesterday. In view of his 7.9 million followers, he wrote: “People attacked me for saying nobody cares about these Olympics (for reasons beyond control of the athletes).

“Here is Tom Daley doing his knitting during the women’s 3m diving final. I rest my case.”

Querying his post, 49-year-old Kirstie has now issued a warning: “Is Piers knocking knitting?

“I only ask because I know, to my cost I once suggested there were more interesting things to knit than socks, that knitters are force to be reckoned with.(sic)

“He needs to tread very carefully.”

Kirstie went on to say she didn’t know for sure what point Piers was trying to make, adding: “God only knows, it is so beyond me as to be in another solar system.

“Man competes as elite athlete, which requires huge degree of sacrifice.

“Man finds way to calm nerves between sessions. Other man belittles it.”

The award-winning diver has had a long-standing love for knitting and crocheting, and made his own pouch to keep his gold medal safe.

He won gold with Matty Lee in the synchronised 10 metres platform last week.

In response to her tweet, one commented: “He’s knocking Tom Daley, not the knitting, although he probably does think Tom is a loser for doing it knowing him.”

“Well the knitters will rally around Tom,” she responded.

Piers has previously slammed the Olympics and called for it to be cancelled.

On July 25, he wrote: “Nobody cares about these covid-ravaged Olympics.

“I feel incredibly sorry for all the athletes still trying to live their Olympic dream, but that is the harsh reality.

“And the great champions like @adam_peaty know it. It should have been either further postponed or cancelled.”

The ex Good Morning Britain presenter also caused a stir by tweeting that bronze and silver medals are not winning.

He tweeted: “I don’t think Silver and Bronze medals are shameful, but no real champion would ever feel comfortable having one in their trophy cabinet.”

Figure skater Meagan Duhamel hit back, telling him she was a proud owner of a bronze medal.

She wrote: “I feel pretty comfortable with my bronze medal. Thank you very much. “Winning” means different things to different people!”

He replied: “Winning means coming 1st, not 3rd…. get out of your comfort zone Meagan!”
