Warner Bros. is remaking Whitney Houston‘s romantic thriller The Bodyguard, which grossed $411 million at the worldwide box office.
According to Variety, Matthew López, the Tony-nominated playwright of The Inheritance, has been picked to write the remake. Lawrence Kasdan of Kasdan Pictures, and Dan Lin and Jonathan Edrich of Rideback will be producing the movie, while Rideback’s Nick Reynolds will executive produce.
Kasdan served as both writer and producer on the 1992 version of The Bodyguard, which starred Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner.
The soundtrack of “The Bodyguard,” is hailed as one of the best film soundtracks of all time, with the album selling more than 12.1 million copies and spawning several Billboard Hot 100 hit songs, including three top fives: “I’m Every Woman,” “I Have Nothing” and the smash No. 1 hit “I Will Always Love You.”
The remake is still in its early stages and official casting for roles hasn’t been worked out as yet. According to Variety, Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson, Channing Tatum and Cardi B have been suggested for the film.
