Will and Kate’s kids pay tribute to ‘Granny Diana’ on UK’s Mother’s Day: ‘Papa is missing you’

The British royal family is celebrating Mother’s Day in the U.K. with a special tribute to the late Princess Diana.

Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, children of Prince William and Duchess Kate, decorated their own cards addressed to “Granny Diana” for their father, the official @KensingtonRoyal Instagram account shared Sunday.

“Dear Granny Diana,” Charlotte, 5, wrote on a pink sheet of paper with a rainbow-colored heart and butterfly and heart stickers.

“I am thinking of you on Mother’s Day. I love you very much. Papa is missing you. Lots of love, Charlotte.”

Seven-year-old George, the future king, wrote a similar message on a green paper: “Dear Granny Diana, Happy happy Mother’s Day. I love you very much and think of you always. Sending lots of love from George.”

Prince Louis, who turns 3 next month, finger-painted a heart and added animal stickers to a green page that included his signature.

Diana, mother to Princes William and Harry and ex-wife to Prince Charles, was killed in a car crash August 31, 1997, at age 36. The royals often use their Mother’s Day posts to pay tribute to her and reflect on how the holiday – celebrated in the U.K. on the fourth Sunday of Lent as opposed to the second Sunday in May in the United States – can be a difficult time for those who have lost loved ones.

“This year Mother’s Day will be different once again,” the caption read. “Many of us will be apart from our loved ones, but looking forward to a time in the not too distant future when we can give our mother a hug again. … But for those experiencing bereavement, today may be particularly challenging. Whatever your circumstances, we are thinking of you this Mother’s Day.”

In another post, the royals shared an image of a two-tiered cake topped with colored pipe cleaners shaped into hearts, made by the three little royals for their mom. It also honored Kate’s mother, Carole Middleton, with a throwback photo of her and the young future duchess.

“Celebrating two other special mothers today,” the caption read.

The posts come as the royal family is embroiled in controversy following an explosive interview between Prince Harry, Duchess Meghan and Oprah Winfrey, during which Meghan revealed she had thoughts of suicide during her time at the palace and that discussions were raised during her pregnancy by an unnamed person about “how dark” her and Harry’s baby’s skin might be.

A statement from the palace, issued Tuesday on behalf of Queen Elizabeth II, Harry’s grandmother, said the “whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan.”

It continued: “The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning. While some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately. Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved family members.”

Prince William told reporters Thursday that he and his family were “very much not a racist family,” adding that he has not spoken to his brother “yet,” but planned to.
