X Factor’s Jedward in shock as they learn of Paul Cattermole’s death while live on TikTok

As fans around the world mourn the tragic loss of S Club 7 star Paul Cattermole, two of Ireland’s very own music icons John and Edward Grimes, better known as Jedward, echoed the shock and devastation as they first heard the news while live on TikTok.

The popular duo, who first shot to fame in X-factor back in 2009, were filming a TikTok from a relaxing looking field, complete with flower crowns, when a fan alerted them of the devastating loss.

In heartbreaking scenes, the duo initially didn’t believe the claims, as they had seen an article about Paul earlier that day and presumed he was alive and well.

Kicking off their live video with all of their usual enthusiasm and energy, there was a clear shift in tone following the announcement, with both stars appearing far more subdued and visibly saddened by the news.

“That’s really upsetting if that’s real,” explained Edward, before adding “Anyway, this is giving vibes.”

Unwilling to accept the news as truth, he then continued: “I don’t know if that’s true guys, let’s Google it.”

Meanwhile his brother John, argued “No, I just saw an article. I think he’s alright! I was online and saw updates and stuff,” as he attempted to lay any worries to rest.

However in a sad twist of fate, Edward soon discovered that the news was indeed true, prompting the star to exclaim: “Oh no, that’s terrible!”

“What? Oh no,” echoed his brother, while also beginning to sing a rendition of Before You Go by Lewis Capaldi.

The heartbreaking reaction is one that no doubt resonated with many fans on Friday as they struggled to come to terms with the loss of such a huge part of their childhoods.

Three weeks ago Paul had been excitedly looking forward to the upcoming reunion tour in October to mark the band’s 25th anniversary, and had even begun to work alongside his old friends as they starred in a special Eurovision themed skit to raise money for Comic Relief last month.

Following the news of his death, fans and famous faces alike have paid tribute to the late star, with many reflecting on how influential a figure he had been in their lives.

Scottish broadcaster Lorraine Kelly described Paul Cattermole as “gentle and shy” as she paid tribute to the singer following his death.

“This is so sad. Lovely man and he was so looking forward to the #sclub7 reunion,” she tweeted. “Interviewed them all many times and struck by how gentle and shy he was.”

Vernon Kay also shared his heartbreak, as he wrote: "This is so very sad. From when I first started in TV all the way through CBBC, T4, TOTP, smash hits poll winners Paul and S Club were always there. He always had time for a chat. RIP."

Meanwhile Hollyoaks actor Jeremy Edwards, who previously dated Paul’s bandmate Rachel, wrote: “RIP Paul Cattermole. My thoughts and love go to all your friends and family.”
