If you can recall back to 2016, the first movie adaptation of Suicide Squad saw success at the box office, but not-so-favorable reviews from fans and critics. Fast forward to 2021; Warner Bros. has done somewhat of a do-over, with a part-sequel, part-reboot of the anti-hero film—this time directed by Guardians of the Galaxy master James Gunn.
Released as part of DC Extended Universe, the 2016 film was directed by David Ayer. Much of the criticism of the film was for the fact that fans wanted a grim, no-holds-barred film for adults and ended up with a borderline PG-13 comedy about misfits—outside of the amount of swearing of course. Standout lead performances from Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller helped to keep the movie watchable, but for many fans it didn’t go where it needed to.
While Gunn’s The Suicide Squad shares some cast members with Ayer’s, the 2021 movie does not require viewing of the similarly-titled 2016 project. This time, the crew of anti-heroes is put on a mission to stop a world-ending threat called ‘Project Starfish’ on the fictional South American nation of Corto Maltes. Davis, Robbie, and Courtney are back to reprise their roles as Waller, Quinn, and Boomerang respectively. Joining the cast is Pete Davidson as Blackguard, Idris Elba as Bloodsport, Sylvester Stallone as King Shark, and John Cena as Peacemaker, among others. It’s truly a star-studded cast with a lot of anticipation—particularly with the excitement around the film’s director.
What’s more exciting, though, is that it’s available to watch right now. If you’re looking for that movie theater experience, the movie is in theaters everywhere. If you prefer to watch from the comfort of your own (or a friend’s) home you’ll need to subscribe to HBO Max.
