Former Coronation Street actress Victoria Ekanoye has been diagnosed with breast cancer.

The actress, who played Angie Appleton in the soap from August 2017 to January in 2019 before departing after just 18 months on the show.

She welcomed her first child Theo with partner Jonny Lomas earlier this year.

The actress announced her diagnosis to OK! magazine as she shared her concerns of not being around for her son Theo following her diagnosis last month.

She told the publication: "I was diagnosed on the thirteenth of October with DCIS, which is Ductal carcinoma in situ. It basically means that cells have turned cancerous within the milk ducts."

Victoria said it was a big change within the family, adding that it's a "big unknown".

She said: "We're being really optimistic, and positive, and really lucky that we've caught it as early as we have.

"I don't know if lucky is the right word, but that's how I feel."

In the video, she said: "Theo is nine months now and when he was six months I was still breast feeding and this little lump was kind of protruding out of the skin whenever they were full.

"You could just see it, you didn't even have to go and find it you could see it."

Victoria was told the lump was benign but she chose to get a second opinion and after four-and-a-half hours of tests she was told to come back the following week.

She went to the doctors with her partner the following week when they were informed of Victoria's diagnosis as the pair said they were feeling optimistic.

Victoria praised her medical team and support network as she said she has a strong team of people around her.

Last week Victoria shared a reminder to people to check their breasts as Breast Cancer Awareness month came to a close.

She told her fans that she wanted to share a little reminder as the post read that "early detection is key".

It read: "Check yourselves once a month ladies (and gents); too frequently and you may not detect the subtle changes, too infrequent and you may notice too late."

She urged people to "be kind to yourself" and to remember to make checking your breasts part of your lifestyle routine.
