An animal shelter in Phoenix, Arizona, offered a unique little extra for people adopting their dogs this weekend.
Everyone who attended a special event this Saturday, February 20, and agreed to give one of Desert Tails Shelter's animals a home was given five free pre-rolled cannabis joints as a bonus gift.
The initiative, which the staff have called Pups and Prerolls, has been so popular the shelter has run it three times this year already.
Kelly Fox, who works at the shelter, told Phoenix New Times: "At our first event, we adopted out 14.
"At our second we adopted out 12, plus four that were not ready for adoption in time for the event."
In cases where the pups were not quite ready for adoption, attendees were shown photos of the dogs and paid their fees in advance – they’ll come back and collect their furry friends in a few months.
The shelter charges $280 (£200) for puppies and $120 (£85) for dogs. All of the animals are neutered and have been given all of the essential vaccinations to help them get off to a good start.
Rachel Nelson, from Cannabis store Territory Dispensary, said: "Everyone should have a best friend to smoke with."
"I really promote getting dogs getting adopted from the shelters. They are usually awesome best friends.
"They really just want to be loyal and fun and want to go on adventures with you and, hey look, you get to have some pre-rolls- so why not have pups and pre-rolls?
"Makes your heart warm."
To dog lovers who aren’t weed smokers, Rachel says "Come anyway!
"We've got dogs and you don't have to take the prerolls. Just an added bonus so we can get doggies new homes."
The use of cannabis for recreational purposes was legalised in November 2020.
Anyone aged 21 years or older can legally purchase up to an ounce of marijuana flower and up to five grams of marijuana in concentrate form.
