A UK city's unsafe "Glory Hole" has been fenced off since February, but the local council has vowed to get people using it again.

Restoring the hilariously-named Glory Hole footpath in Lincoln could set Lincolnshire County Council back anywhere between £60,000 and £100,000, reports LincolnshireLive.

And it isn't just the people of Lincoln who now care about the Glory Hole. The story of its planned restoration was covered on BBC's Look North programme for East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire and presenter Peter Levy really struggled to keep a straight face.

A clip of Levy giggling as he discussed the Glory Hole went viral on X yesterday (Wednesday, August 2). It has since been viewed more than 168,000 times.

One person commented: "I wonder if I should Google where I can find this place." A second said: "Ah, but the question is, who is on the other side." While a third said: "Some people watching won't have known why Peter was laughing, which makes it even funnier."

The Glory Hole was initially closed due to fractured wooden beams and failing concrete, but locals are keen for it to be restored to its former glory.

The council said repair costs are being driven up by the difficulty of accessing the Glory Hole.

A highways spokesperson said the council plans to install a structure similar to the previous timber jetty, but using modern materials that mimic timber.

He said: "Our outline design is now complete and we’re currently discussing it with our supply chain. The preferred repair solution is to replicate the former timber jetty using fibre-reinforced polymer.

"This is much more durable than timber and we are using it more and more to replace the county’s timber footbridges as and when needed."

Security around the site has already been increased after people kept "risking their lives" squeezing through the Glory Hole. Measures include extra video surveillance cameras, sandbags and barriers to prevent further trespassing.
