The mysterious 500,000-mile-square patch of North Atlantic Ocean has been blamed for dozens of unexplained disappearances. It is widely accepted that the Triangle is located between Florida, Bermuda and the islands of the Greater Antilles, however the area does not feature on any world maps. Over the last 200 years around 50 ships and 20 aircraft are reported to have vanished in the Triangle.

One of the most famous was Flight 19, a US Navy bombing mission, in which five planes and their 14-man crew disappeared in the Triangle in 1945.

Renewed efforts to track down the lost planes – all TBM Avenger Torpedo bombers – feature in a new season of ‘History’s Greatest Mysteries’.

The docuseries on History Channel US is presented and executive produced by actor and director, Laurence Fishburne.

The presenter explains how the Triangle’s abnormal weather conditions make it so notoriously dangerous.

He said: “The Bermuda Triangle borders some of the Earth’s most powerful forces.

“The Gulf Stream, the Atlantic’s strongest current, [is] known to carry disabled ships and planes miles from their reported positions.”

He also said there is “a mid-ocean area that is often eerily becalmed, trapping many a stranded vessel in a slow death grip.”

Finally, he added: “And the Triangle is a superhighway for hurricanes.”

Episode one of the new season of History’s Greatest Mysteries catches up with deep-sea explorer Rob Kraft.

Since last year the expert and his team aboard the RV Petrel research vessel have been searching for the Flight 19 aircraft in the Bermuda Triangle.

One dramatic scene in the documentary shows how the team had to battle the bizarre weather conditions.

Fishburne said: “Petrel is being chased back to port by the Bermuda Triangle’s freak and dangerous weather swings.

“These sudden and violent storms called ‘white squalls’ have sunk ships and added to the Triangle’s deadly reputation.”

Historical investigator, Wayne Abbot, added: “You had a lot of incidences where planes went missing, boats went missing, so you have to respect it and you have to fear it.”

His fellow investigator, David O’Keefe, added: “There’s no doubt that this area is incredibly active.”

Military historian Martin K. A. Morgan, who also featured in the programme, said: “It is an area where there are anomalies that cannot be explained by physical science.”

Flight 19 set off on a training mission from Florida on December 5, 1945, just months after the end of World War Two.

The squadron flew east to carry out bombing runs in an area called Hens and Chickens Shoals.

However, as the aircraft headed north on the next leg of the journey, the crew encountered navigational difficulties.

Flight 19’s leader, Lieutenant Charles C. Taylor, reported that his compass was not working properly.

Radio communications from the flight suggest that as a weather front came in, Taylor became disorientated with his location.

There was disagreement among the crew about their position, with Taylor attempting to steer the flight to the northeast, while some men wanted to fly west.

The crew lost communication with those on the ground and the five aircraft disappeared. None of the planes have ever been recovered.

History’s Greatest Mysteries is available on the History Channel US.
