Gravestones typically serve as a memoriam of someone who has recently passed away and typically feature some facts and words about the individual. They tend to be very pleasant and emotional , making it rare that you would be left laughing – but this is not always the case.

Many people who have passed away used the opportunity to leave a witty remark on their grave.

1. Merv Griffin
The tombstone belonging to Merv Griffin is located in Westwood Village Memorial Park, Westwood, California.

Mr Griffin lived from 1925 to 2007, and used his grave as a way to leave a humorous message about his passing.

It says: “I will not be right back after this message.”

2. John Yeast
Although Mr Yeast’s tombstone does not list when he lived, the pun written on it gives a lot of insight into his sense of humour.

The grave says: “Here lies John Yeast.

“Pardon me for not rising.”

3.John Doe
Although this funny gravestone is an artist’s impression, it makes a lighthearted joke of how social media has become linked to popularity.

Alongside a thumbs up with the number 13,749 written next to it (appearing to represent ‘likes’ on Facebook), it says “he was well liked.”

4. “I told you I was sick!”
Another funny tombstone drafted by an artist makes light of the fact that we all die eventually.

The grave simply reads: “I told you I was sick.”

The joke was actually used by comedian Spike Milligan when he died in 2002 in a nod to his hypochondria. His gravestone includes the message ‘Dúirt mé leat go raibh mé breoite’, Irish for ‘I told you I was ill’.

Although a light-hearted tombstone may not be for everyone, it is clearly a good way to leave a lasting impression on those who knew you – and even those who did not.
