A terrifying picture of a shadowy figure snapped in some woodland has the internet in frenzy, with many suggesting it is a ghost, clown or Bigfoot.

Two images – one of them zoomed in – were posted to Twitter. The user added the caption: "TOOK THIS ON MY WALK WHAT THE F*** IS THAT IM SCARED."

They show what appears to be a figure crouched behind some shrubs with its head and left shoulder visible.

A second Twitter user posted another version of the snap with the saturation heightened to make the figure more visible. In that snap there appears to be dark regions where its eyes and mouth would be.

Many theorised that it could be someone in clown makeup following the 2016 clown sightings craze that saw people dressed in creepy costumes lurk in public to scare people.

One said: "It’s some dude in clown makeup????? Why tf he out in the woods poor bugger probably wandered off from the other clowns 🙁 [sic]."

"Why does it look like it has painted a clown face, I would have ran back home," said a second.

The snaps soon caught the attention of Bigfoot believers and were shared to Reddit page r/Bigfoot.

The poster wrote: "I don't have a strong opinion either way, but I will say that the person's account who posted it has absolutely nothing to do with anything strange or unusual. She is an apparent model or 'social media influencer' type."

Others latched onto the idea that, because the Twitter user wasn't a Bigfoot believer themselves, this may actually be a legitimate picture.

One said: "She never mentioned Bigfoot, right? So I wouldn't call it fake. There is something or someone, we just don't know what or who. I just don't think she was faking a Bigfoot sighting."

Trying to explain the blotches on its face, another wrote: "Who is to say the BF [Bigfoot] doesn’t apply mud to the face during the summer months as a form of a primitive sunblock?"

A third didn't think it was Bigfoot at all. They said: "I would bet ghost before Bigfoot."
