Police in Mexico were called after residents reported the dead birds strewn across the sidewalk. The horror scenes were in Alvaro Obregon area of Cuauhtemoc, a city in the state of Chihuahua.

Dozens of yellow-headed blackbirds, a migratory bird, had arrived from northern Canada to spend the winter in Mexico, but likely ended up being impacted from high levels of air pollution.

A security camera filmed a huge black “cloud” of birds plunging downwards and hitting the roof of a building and a street pavement.

Several birds, however, survived the crash and appeared to lift off and take flight once more.

It is preliminarily suspected that the birds could have died due to inhaling toxic smoke, maybe from a heater or they may have been electrocuted after standing on power lines.

The cause of death has not been confirmed, and an investigation is ongoing into the incident that took place at around 8.30am on February 7.

It comes after around 200 starlings were found dead on the ground in Pembrokeshire, Wales.

The cause of death for the flock has not been confirmed, with some residents pointing to the nearby Dragon LNG plant.

One man added he heard a loud bang before seven or eight birds rained down on his car in nearby Waterston.

Michaela Pritchard said it looked like a “massacre” as she travelled home, and called Pembrokeshire council to report what the dead birds at around 8pm.

Thousands of dead birds fall from the sky

Bird expert Dominic Couzens, 59, told MailOnline: “They were probably startled by something, maybe a loud bang.

“Something unexpected made them disorientated and then they flew into something.

“It’s very odd. It’s very strange. It’s not something that’s easily explained.

“It could be some misadventure. They could have done something daft. They’re not perfect. It’s all speculation.”

Speaking to NBC news, Kate Slankard, an avian biologist with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, noted “an unusual amount of bird mortality” in 2021.

Wildlife experts in at least six states and Washington, D.C., have reported an increase in sick or dying birds in the past month.

She told the outlet: “We’re experiencing an unusual amount of bird mortality this year.

“We have yet to figure out what the problem is. The condition seems to be pretty deadly.”

Birds have been spotted with symptoms including crusty or puffy eyes, neurological signs of seizures and an inability to stay balanced.
