Bizarre sunken ‘nuclear bunker’ desert home hits market with ‘perfect timing’

An underground desert home selling for £1.5million has been likened to a nuclear bunker, which are enjoying a resurgence in popularity amid the crisis in eastern Europe.

Vladimir Putin has hinted at nuclear warfare if world leaders step defend Ukraine from Russia's invasion, and nuclear forces have been put on high alert in recent days.

A strange sunken house in Scottsdale, Arizona in the US has divided opinion over its subterranean design but some say its listing is "perfect timing".

While its non-existent curb appeal has been mocked on social media, estate agent photos reveal what lies beneath a concrete square built on a raised section of ground.

Commenting on Zillow Gone Wild's posting of the five bedroom and four bathroom home, someone said: "Perfect timing for a near nuclear blast proof home…. puck futin."

Another Facebook user was thinking along the same lines, they wrote: "It's a seller's market for doomsday bunkers right now."

The property's description says nothing about its ability to protect residents from explosions yet that has no stopped the imaginations of social media users running wild.

One person said: "I thought this was gonna be another doomsday bunker."

"What a waste…it's not even a real bomb shelter. Lol," another joked.

If dangerous radioactivity was not enough to hide from, the home has also been put forward as an ideal base in the event of a zombie apocalypse.

Someone commented: "I like it but was I the only one that thought about how that fence wasn’t high enough to prevent zombies from just falling in the courtyard in a zombie apocalypse?"

  • 'Life on the moon by 2040' with plan for humans to survive off rocks in 'lunar village'

They were not alone in their vision either as another reply read: "Perfect for the zombie apocalypse!"

Given its location in Arizona's dusty desert, the house has also been compared to residences seen in Star Wars.

A clear fan of the architecture exclaimed: "It’s a bomb shelter! No, it’s a 70’s dream palace! No, it’s Luke Skywalker’s house from Star Wars! Whatever it is, it’s perfectly adapted to desert living and I kinda want one."

Their view was echoed: "Why do I feel like this is the home Luke Skywalker grew up in??"

It has also been claimed that a "creepy crawl space" runs around the house which perhaps suggests theories of it acting as a doomsday bunker are not too far off.

"My coworker went to an estate sale there not too long ago," someone said. "Not pictured – a creepy crawl space that goes all the way around the house perimeter."

Other reactions to the house on social media suggest it would be the "Perfect spot for alien abductions" and also "great for a nudist" because no neighbours can look in.

The home's innovative design which has been praised for lowering air conditioning costs in the scorching Arizona climate.

Yet its dated wooden interior left scores of social media users disappointed and confused as to how the property can be listed for £1.5million.
