Brand new Tesla Model S Plaid ‘drives up hill while ablaze’ just weeks after model with new battery went on market as two fire trucks take 3 hours to extinguish the flames

  • A Tesla Model S Plaid caught fire Wednesday evening in a Philadelphia suburb
  • Fire fighters responded to the call just before 9am ET in Haverford, PA
  • A  resident  said they saw the car driving up hill while it was on fire
  • It took fire fighters three hours to extinguish the blaze, which totaled the Tesla

Fire fighters battled a burning Tesla Model S Plaid for three hours Wednesday night in a Philadelphia suburb.

The Gladwyne Fire Department responded to a call just before 9pm ET in Haverford, Pennsylvania, according to Electrek, which first reported on the incident.

‘Due to prior training classes on Tesla Vehicle Fire emergencies, Engine 24 laid a 5 inch supply line into the scene so that we could keep a continual water stream on the fire to extinguish the fire and cool the batteries down to ensure complete extinguishment,’ the Gladwyne Volunteer Fire Company shared in a Facebook post.

‘Engine 24 and Engine 25 both deployed hand lines to extinguish the fire, each maintained a dedicated water source and continued to cool the vehicle down for almost 90 minutes.’

An EMT who also responded to the scene said the call came from a resident of the neighborhood who saw the ‘Tesla driving up hill without a passenger while ablaze,’ but also notes it cannot be confirmed due to a lack of video evidence.

The Gladwyne fire department says no injuries occurred last night, but the Tesla is nothing more than a pile of metal and ash.

First responders were called to the 100 block of Rose Lane, where they came upon the burning Tesla parked in the street.

According to Electrek, the car is a brand new Model S Plaid based on the front-end and wheels seen on the pictures snapped Wednesday evening.

The EMT at the scene shared details of the incident on Reddit: ‘The caller claimed that the car was driving up hill without a passenger while ablaze but this cannot be conclusively proven due to a lack of video evidence and the fact that all of the internals that would prove it are currently worth their weight in scrap.’

DailyMail.com has contacted Tesla and the Gladwyne Fire Department for comment and has yet to receive a response.

Tesla just recently unveiled its Model S Plaid on June 11, which CEO Elon Musk says can go from zero to 60 in under two seconds and can achieve the top speed of 200mph – but drivers need ‘proper wheels and tires’ for an undisclosed additional cost.

It is not clear how Wednesday’s incident will impact sales of the vehicle, but Tesla has come under fire in the past for its vehicles catching on fire.

One recent incident happened in November 2020 in Frisco, Texas, where a Tesla Model S suddenly erupted into flames.

Another fatal event happened just this past April, but it involved a Tesla crashing into a tree that sparked a fire and killed two men. The fire may have may have started after a ‘significant front-end collision’ ignited the battery, fire officials said about 10 days after the incident

Usmaan Ahmad told the Washington Post he had just pulled off a thoroughfare on November 23, when he heard a series of loud metallic bangs emanating from beneath his 2015 Tesla Model S 85D.

Another fatal event happened just this past April, but it involved a Tesla crashing into a tree that sparked a fire and killed two men.

Dr. William Varner, 59, and Everette Talbot, 69, both died when the Tesla Model S smashed into a tree and burst into flames in Texas on April 17.

Police said it was apparent that there was no one in the driver’s seat at the time of the crash in the wealthy The Woodlands neighborhood, Houston

However, Tesla refuted the clams, saying a deformed steering wheel suggested that someone was likely in the driver´s seat.
