‘British Bigfoot’ hunted after ‘big hairy hominids’ spotted in UK woods

Although almost all Bigfoot sightings come out of North America, there have also been eerie reports of apish figures lurking in the woods here.

So much so that in January 2015 the team of Bigfoot researchers from US TV show Finding Bigfoot made the journey across the pond to investigate.

One thing Bigfoot believers point to is the rich folklore of Sasquatches, often depicted in centuries-old drawings or stories from North American indigenous tribes.

There is a similar folkloric history here around spooky human-like figures who live in the woods, such as Green Men and the Woodwose.

The only clear picture of what could be a British Bigfoot comes from Harwood Forest, a 3,527-hectare conifer woodland lying within the Northumberland National Park.

Home to plenty of deer and other forest-dwellers, as well as interspersed farms with more animals, the area would have enough food to support a wild hominid.

The snap was taken by Neil Young, a Bigfoot enthusiast from Newcastle, on a trail through the forest.

Speaking to the Finding Bigfoot team about the picture, he explained he was walking on the trail when he heard some ape-like noises.

"I stopped because I could hear the vocals and branches snapping," he said.

"And sure enough, one ran across.

"The figure was just completely one colour. [It walked] very fluently, a little bit of arm swing, I could see two legs so it was definitely a figure."

Neil also said he found a dead sheep in the woods nearby, "upside-down" with its "innards taken out", neck snapped and "legs gone".

Neil Robson, also from Newcastle, is another Brit who reckons he laid eyes on a Sasquatch.

He said he was walking back to his car after a day fishing with pals at Bolam Lake Country Park, Northumberland, when he saw a 10-11ft tall hairy figure, roughly 5ft wide, staring at him with "two bright green eyes".

"I headed off as fast as my legs could carry us, I was away as fast as I could," he said.

"It was just so, it was just so real. I just thought, 'I don't like this'.

"I didn't know what it was. It was something big, scary standing there. It fits the description of a Sasquatch."

Lee Brickley, another Brit, reckons he found Sasquatch footprints and claw marks around Cannock Chase in Staffordshire.

He said the tracks measured 41cm (16in) from toe to heel and claimed that there had been 12 reported sightings there since 2019.

"I was astounded… I’d never seen a footprint that large in my life, and it was clearly not made using a mould or cast," he said.

"That is probably the moment I realised the Cannock Chase Bigfoot was more than just a myth."

Despite the sightings in England, the Finding Bigfoot team concluded that, based on topography, the most likely place a Bigfoot could live in the UK is Scotland, specifically around the Cairngorms National Park and Caledonian Forest.

The area is the UK's largest national park and contains Ben Macdui.

In folklore, the mountain is home to Am Fear Liath Mòr – 'The Big Grey Man' – a Bigfoot-like creature that supposedly haunts the peak.

"If there are any Bigfoots in the UK, that would be the spot to be in," said Bigfoot researcher Cliff Barackman.

The team accessed the most remote part of the woodland on ATVs for a night investigation, armed with thermal imaging cameras.

Unfortunately, no Sasquatches were found.
