A combination of the drugs nafamostat and Pegasys (IFNα) has shown promising results when treating coronavirus infections.
To date, more than six billion vaccines have been administered worldwide but parts of the globe still lack access to effective treatments and drugs.
According to researchers at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), a combination of readily available drugs could help fight the pandemic.
Professor Denis Kainov at NTNU’s Department of Clinical and Molecular Medicine (IKOM), said: “This combination effectively suppresses the infection.”
Nafamostat is presently used in certain therapies against COVID-19 and is being extensively tested in Japan.
And Pegasys (IFNα) is already being used to fight hepatitis C, a virus that can infect the liver.
Magnar Bjoras, a professor in the Department of Clinical and Molecular Medicine, said: “Both drugs attack a factor in our cells called TMPRSS2, which plays a critical role in viral replication.”
