COVID-killing 'gas mask' and futuristic gaming chair debut at CES

Coronavirus-killing ‘gas mask’ that amplifies speech and a luxurious gaming chair with a retractable 60-in curved LED screen debut at CES

  • An electronics maker, Razer, debuted two products at CES 2021
  • Project Hazel is ‘the world’s smartest’ mask that looks like a gas mask
  • It uses an N95 medical-grade respirator, ventilators and airflow regulators
  • The front is clear, allowing others to read the wearer’s lips and emotions
  • It also has a built-in microphone and speaker to amplify the user’s voice
  • The other item is a futuristic gaming chair called Project Brooklyn
  • It boasts a retractable curved 60-inch LED screen for a panoramic view

Razer, an electronics developer, is known for unveiling bizarre, but exciting devices, at the Consumer Electronics Show and even with the event hosted virtually, the firm did not disappoint.

The Singapore-American company showcased ‘the world’s smartest mask’ that looks like a futuristic gas mask, along with a new gaming chair that includes a retractile 60-inch curved OLED screen.

The mask, dubbed Project Hazel, features a built-in microphone and speaker to amplify the wearer’s voice – putting an end to muffled conversations caused by cloth face coverings.

Project Brooklyn, which many say is only a pipe dream, immerses users in the game with haptic feedback throughout the chair’s frame and a panoramic screen.

Razer has said in the past that some of its designs, such as a three-screen laptop, are purely exercises for them – as the firm focuses on developing and selling consumer electronics.

However, Project Hazel is poised to be more than just a concept and could hit the market sometime this year.

The mask features an N95 medical-grade respirator, active air ventilators and airflow regulators.

The ventilators, one on each side, bring in cold air and releases heat produced from exhaling to prevent the buildup of carbon dioxide.

And it uses bacterial filtration efficiency pods to trap 95 percent of airborne particles that are zapped with UV light, including the coronavirus.

Addressing the problem of masks and clear speech, Project Hazel is clear so others can read the wearer’s lips and facial expressions.

There are also RGB LEDs to light up the mouth, so movement can be seen even at night.

However, what takes this innovation to the next level is Razer’s patent pending VoiceMap that includes a built-in microphone and speaker that projects the user’s speech clearly.

Razer says the mask is waterproof, scratch resistant and made from recyclable plastics. And it uses a separate charging box to keep all of its features powered

And it uses a separate charging box to keep all of its features powered.

‘The Project Hazel smart mask concept is intended to be functional, yet comfortable and useful for interacting with the world, while maintaining a sociable aesthetic,’ Min-Liang Tan, Razer’s co-founder and CEO, said in the release.

Project Hazel is said to one day make it to market, but Project Brooklyn may never move past the concept stage.

The gaming chair features built-in haptics to immerse users in the video game, along with modular 4D armrests.

But what makes this design so ‘incredible’ is a retracting screen sowed in the back of the chair.

The deployable 60-inch curved OLED display is pulled from the back and unravels in front of the gamer for a panoramic experience – and all they have to do is push a button.

The carbon fiber bucket seat is equipped with plus, high-density foam cushions to support each unique body type.

And the carbon body ‘esnure perfect posture throughout gaming marathons.’

‘Razer will continue to develop this gaming chair concept, conducting testing with top esports athletes and influencers to benchmark feasibility, comfort and performance,’ shared Razer.

‘The Project Brooklyn concept is intended to offer insights on how to improve user mechanics and design to deliver a more immersive gameplay experience and inspire Razer’s growing portfolio of gaming chairs in the near future.’
