The legendary BBC presenter began his career in the Sixties and has become a leading figure in raising awareness of climate change.

While Sir David’s earlier work focused more on the wonders of the natural world, his later work has been more vocal in support of environmental causes.

He has advocated for restoring planetary biodiversity, limiting population growth, switching to renewable energy, mitigating climate change, reducing meat consumption, and setting aside more areas for natural preservation.

Also among the candidates for the accolade are Pope Francis, the Myanmar National Unity Government formed by opponents of last year’s coup and Tuvalu’s foreign minister Simon Kofe.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee, which decides who wins the award, does not comment on nominations, keeping secret for 50 years the names of nominators and unsuccessful nominees.

However, some nominators choose to make their picks public.

Sir David has been nominated for his “efforts to inform about, and protect, Earth’s natural diversity, a prerequisite for sustainable and peaceful societies”.

Pope Francis was also nominated for his efforts to help solve the climate crisis.

Environmentalists have won the Nobel Peace Prize in the past, including Kenyan activist Wangari Maathai, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and former US President Al Gore.

But Henrik Urdal, director of the Peace Research Institute Oslo, said: “There is no scientific consensus on climate change as an important driver of violent combat.

“I think the WHO is likely to be discussed in the Committee for this year’s prize.”

A petition backing Sir David to win has been running for the last three years.

It now has 20,000 signatures.

The petition reads: “Sir David Attenborough deserves the Nobel Peace Prize for his effort to save our planet from Climate Change.

“The UK government or any National assembly has the power to nominate him as do university professors.

“A petition to the UK parliament via Petition Parliament was wrongfully rejected. as they said it was not their remit.

By supporting this petition you may help achieve a nomination for the Peace Prize for the most honest, most trusted and much loved broadcaster.”
