‘Dictator’ seizes American territory with kayak navy and cookie dough currency

A self-proclaimed dictator with a stunning navy made up of two kayaks has declared a micronation within the United States.

The one-acre Nevada-based nation of so-called President Baugh, a self-proclaimed "dictator", has seen the bloke attempt to separate from the States with a new currency and daring navy.

His beloved Republic of Molossia, set up as a one-acre micronation, has a population of just 35 and is based in the north-western Nevada desert.

But its historic rise began in a suburban house in Portland, Oregon, where the nation was originally known as the Grand Republic of Vludstein, with Baugh appointed as Prime Minister at the time.

His Excellency was joined by childhood best friend James Spielman at the time, who was appointed King of the independent lands until they lost contact.

The pair were said to have been inspired by the movie The Mouse That Roared, a satirical feature film about a fictional nation declaring war on the US.

Speaking of the influence that film had on his decision to carve out a micronation in the desert, President Baugh said: "I was struck by the imagination and creativity of that."

Since then, the "benevolent dictator" and former US Army man began expanding on what was initially a bit of childish fun.

The President continued: "It was more fictional. I guess you could say. There was no internet back then, so we made it up as we went along.

"The internet came along, and I was able to see that other people had created their own countries. So I took Molossia from just being on paper to having our own website."

Other people have started their own micronations in the past, notably Danny Wallace who proclaimed himself King of the so-called Kingdom of Lovely.

One key difference between the two dear leaders, though, is that President Baugh has an army.

That army may only be comprised of two "inflatable kayaks", but it is a force to be reckoned with, as is the economy of Molossia, which is entirely dependent on cookie dough prices.

Of these choices, His Excellency said: "We like doing things a little differently here in our country. We also have our own measurement system and time zone, stuff like that."

Measuring systems within the micronation are based around the size of Baugh's hand and the size of Diet Pepsi cans.

President Baugh, who leads the tours and says it "takes about an hour and a half to see literally every site" and that his micronation is just a "bit of fun".

But deeper down, His Excellency has expressed the country is "dependent on the US for almost everything economically".

Despite that, President Baugh added: "But within those limits, we take our nation pretty seriously and, at the same time, have a good time with it."
