An eerie abandoned 'ghost ship' was discovered floating abandoned off the shore in the middle of the night.

The ship, measuring around 80m long, was discovered in the Gulf of Thailand on January 6.

It had the words Jin Shui Yuan 2 written across it in Chinese letters, but its departing origin is unknown.

There was no crew, cargo or any form of identification documents on board, after being found by Chevron's offshore oil rig staff around one hundred nautical miles from the Songkhla Lake – the largest natural lake in Thailand.

Video footage shows Thai navy officials checking out the insides of the ship, equipped with guns.

Once it was reported, the Thai navy attempted a recovery.

But it is believed that the ship sank due to strong winds and rough seas while being towed near Sichon District in Nakhon Si Thammarat province on January 9.

This caused an 1km-wide oil leak, which has now been cordoned off in the hopes that fishermen will avoid the area, and that it will limit the damage to the surrounding environment.

The Second Naval Area Command has been dispatched to keep an eye on the area.

A notice has been issued to the ship-owner to salvage the vessel within 15 days.

Thai army captain Itthipat Gavinfuengfukul said: “We have been trying to bring the ship to shore, but it sank before we could reach it.

“Buoys have been deployed at the point where it sank.

“The ship is 18 metres from the water's surface and about 28 nautical miles from the coast of Sichon district.”

He also said that this was the first time that Thailand has encountered an abandoned vessel such as this – but failed to clarify whether or not the ship was in Thai waters illegal.

The Centre for National Marine Interest Region 2 has also said that it will be investigating the matter further.
