Ex-Chernobyl worker who looks like ‘badass movie villain’ now fights for Ukraine

A bloke who looks like a 'badass movie villain' and who helped in the clean up after the disaster at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant is fighting on the frontline for Ukraine.

Yuriy Korolovych, who appears to be in his late fifties to early sixties, was among those who rushed to help in the clean up after the explosion in one of the nuclear reactors at the site in April 1986.

The official Twitter page of the Ukrainian Armed Forces tweeted a picture of the striking character, with many rushing to comment on his Cosack style moustache and peculiar hairdo.

Defense of Ukraine tweeted: "Yuriy Korolovych, head of the Design Department of the Chornobyl NPP.

"Yuriy was among those who came to liquidate the consequences of the Chornobyl Disaster. He had been working at the Chornobyl NPP since 1987.

"In 2022 he joined #UAarmy to protect his country from a new disaster."

The tweet subsequently went viral, with over one million views and over 18k likes, and people had plenty to say about Korolovych.

"He looks like he will be the final boss for quite a few Russians," one commentator said on Twitter.

Another added: "Pretty sure if you’d have sent this pic to Putin last Feb he might have said ‘actually, let’s not.’ All my respect."

A third said: "You can see he is a real badass."

"He looks like he came straight out of Call Of Duty poster," another said, as several others added that he looks like a movie villain.

It comes after Ukrainian foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba said that Ukrainian troops will 'fight' on in an 'uphill battle', as potential peace talks with Russian aggressors are scheduled for February.

A potential peace summit helmed by the United Nations and General António Guterres, could be held by the end of that month, which would coincide with the anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Speaking of a peace treaty and the involvement of Guterres, Kuleba said: "They can only be invited to this step in this way.

"He [Guterres] has proven himself to be an efficient mediator and an efficient negotiator, and most importantly, as a man of principle and integrity. So we would welcome his active participation."
