French ‘Spider-Man’ climbs up 613ft skyscraper as 60th birthday treat to himself

A climber known as the French 'Spider Man' pulled off a daring climb over the weekend to mark his 60th birthday.

Alain Robert scaled a huge 48-storey building in Paris without a harness or a rope to prove that age is just a number.

Dressed in red, he climbed using a bag of chalk and a pair of climbing shoes. After making it safely to the top of the 187-metre tall building, he waved his hands to celebrate.

Robert said he wanted the climb to raise awareness about climate change action.

He also said: "I want to send people the message that being 60 is nothing. You can still do sport, be active, do fabulous things.

"I promised myself several years ago that when I reached 60, I would climb that tower again because 60 symbolises retirement age in France and I thought that was a nice touch."

Robert first began climbing in 1975 near Valence in southern France before ditching the ropes to become a free solo climber in 1977.

Since then, he has climbed more than 150 of the world's tallest structures, including the Eiffel Tower, the Golden Gate Bridge, and even the Burj Khalifa in Dubai—the world's tallest building.

He was banned from climbing any building in the UK after climbing a skyscraper in London without any safety gear.

Robert climbed Salesforce Tower in 45 minutes, but was arrested on his descent. He pleaded guilty to causing a public nuisance and was ordered to pay £5500 compensation to City of London Police, as well as receiving a ban from climbing any UK building.
