Ghost of creepy old lady lays flowers at graveyard before vanishing

Locals in Shropshire claim that their graveyard is watched over by a “gentle” ghost.

The legend of “The Lady of St Michael’s Churchyard” has been spoken about for years in Madeley, Telford and depicts a woman who lays flowers on graves before vanishing into thin air.

Many residents have claimed to have witnessed this and maintain that the Lady is real, but completely harmless to onlookers.

The church yard hosts lots of unique graves that create a spooky and yet interesting atmosphere at the location.

Amy Boucher, a local expert in Shropshire folklore spent time looking into the legend of the ghostly lady.

"Little is known about the identity of Madeley’s first ghost,” she tells the Shropshire Star.

"She can be found haunting St Michael’s Churchyard, which is certainly an atmospheric location.

"If you like graveyards, you will probably be impressed with St Michael’s, with its numerous unique graves. From Mary Tooth – whose epitaph reads ‘her warfare is complete’ (one can only assume what such warfare was) to the beautiful hand-crafted mosaic memorial to Charles Arthur Turner (a little boy who died whilst playing in the local area) it’s clear that history rises up through these stones.”

The church is undoubtedly spooky, with a variety of old graves that could be perceived as quite intricate. The history can be traced back all the way to the 12th century, when it was attached to the priory of St Milburga at Much Wenlock, who held the manorial rights and titles. The church was then constructed sometime during the 13th century.

Over 800 years of history has generated many tales of sightings of the Lady of St Michael’s Churchyard.

“This female entity is frequently reported wandering through the graveyard, occasionally stopping at certain graves, before continuing her journey, only to lay flowers at one of the older, more neglected gravestones” says Boucher.

"She appears as an old lady, often with a dark grey or black cloak pulled tightly around her, as if she is cold. She pauses for a moment after laying the flowers, deep in thought before disappearing.

"Most reported sightings occur in the morning when the graveyard is drenched in birdsong. People say that seeing the lady makes them feel calm and they are almost soothed by her presence, which makes her all the more lovely.”

The identity of this ghostly Lady is unknown, but locals claim she is the “gentle guardian” of their churchyard.
