Giant orchids that can reach up to 3.2ft (one metre) tall have been discovered in Oxfordshire – marking the first time they’ve been spotted growing wild in the UK.
The stunning pink flowers were spotted on a grassy slope near Didcot, Oxfordshire by trainee nurse Hamza Nobes, while he was out on a walk.
The 29-year-old said he was ‘ecstatic’ to discover the plant here in the UK, although he doesn’t wish to reveal its exact location.

How did the orchid get to the UK?
While Himantoglossum robertianum is typically found in southern and central Europe, it has been spotted in France, the Netherlands and now the UK, amid rising temperatures.
However, it is not believed the plants arrive here naturally.
Instead, it’s likely someone scattered the seeds in both Oxfordshire and the Netherlands around 15 years ago, according to The Guardian.
The giant orchid, called Himantoglossum robertianum, is typically found in southern and central Europe, and has sweet-smelling purplish-red flowers.
Mr Nobes, who has been interested in orchids for two years, discovered the flowers down a steep slope while out on a walk.
Speaking to The Guardian, he said: ‘I was ecstatic. I’ve never really found anything, and I’m not a botanist in any way shape or form.
‘It was weird, because a few weeks prior I was looking through my European orchid book and I was looking at the giant orchid and thought that’s such a beautiful orchid, it would be lovely to see one day, maybe in Greece or somewhere, but really it was just 10 minutes from my house.’

Professor Ian Denholm, an orchid expert from the University of Hertfordshire, described it as an ‘exciting find’.
‘There was a [giant orchid] seen about 15 years ago, it wasn’t widely reported and it came as news to me in fact … it was never really made public, and the plant itself presumably didn’t last very long,’ he told The Guardian.
‘It’s a very stately orchid. It lives up to its name of giant orchid. It’s got quite a long and dense flower spike.’

This purple-coloured orchid produces large stems of 200 flowers that grow up to 80cm in height. It can be seen growing on the edges of woodland, and sometimes in open grassland.
This meadow plant has been in decline since less land was used for grazing meaning it was smothered by others

Status: Vulnerable/Near Threatened

Habitat: Grassland
Where? Oxfordshire, Chilterns and north and south Downs
This plant declined before 1950 when less land was used for grazing and it was smothered by other coarser plants. It is now found in just 21 areas in the south of England, where it was probably re-introduced through ‘wild flower seed’ mixtures.
The sun loving plant grows in open grassland, and along south-facing hedge banks and the southern edges of woodland.

An arctic-alpine plant that is a relic of the ice age, It has two pink bell-like flowers on a slender stem and a thicker stem below that creeps along the ground forming small mats. The Twinflower is considered one of our smallest and most delicate native flowers.
It now grows in just 50 unrelated sites following changes in woodland management.

10. Lesser Butterfly-orchid

This white-flower orchid has been lost from 75 per cent of the English countryside since records began. Growing a 30cm-high stem, the plant is now scattered across open areas and those with acidic soil. The best chance of seeing it is in the Cae Blaen Dyffryn Nature Reserve, Wales, which hosts a population that can exceed 3,000 in good years.
The orchids decline may be linked to a symbiotic fungus it depends on to grow, according to Plantlife UK, which is very sensitive to fertilisers and fungicides. Their use on open grassland may have played a part in the plants march towards extinction.

11. Yellow Birds-nest

Habitat: Beech and Hazel woodland
Where? UK-wide
The whole plant is a yellow-brown colour, and tends to grow in leaf litter in shaded woodland. However, it began to decline after 1930, possibly due to changes in woodland management, overgrazing and habitat fragmentation.
