Britain’s first Defence Space Strategy will be published on Tuesday, with £1.4bn earmarked for the next 10 years. It comes after the UK released its National Space Strategy in September which outlined the Government’s plan to “build one of the most innovative and attractive space economies in the world”.

According to a Government statement, £968million of the billion-pound investment will be committed to deliver a multi-satellite system.

Dubbed the ISTARI Programme, the system is planned to support greater global surveillance and intelligence for military operations.

Another £61m is earmarked to explore “cutting-edge” laser communications technology to deliver data from space to Earth at a speed equivalent to superfast broadband.
