A stunned Reddit user has spotted what appears to be an alien mothership emerging from the clouds over an address in Ochopee, Florida.
Posted to the subreddit Google Map shenanigans by user, the image captures the “UFO” as it glides out from behind a mass of clouds above Pine Oak Road in Ochopee, Florida.
The truth is, as is all too often the case with UFO sightings, in fact a bizarre optical illusion.
The non-human creature captured on the Google Streetview image was, sadly, entirely terrestrial.
A butterfly fluttering close to the camera was captured in mid-flight, and the systems AI photo-stitching has blended it into a nearby cloud formation.
Nevertheless, at first glance the Streetview capture is a stunning image of what looks like a giant saucer from Steven Spielberg’s hugely influential 1977 sci-fi classic Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
Close Encounters, which was developed from a film called Firelight that a then-teenage Spielberg made in the mid-1960s, featured huge extraterrestrial motherships studded with multicoloured lights that finally make contact with humanity in a deserted area of Wyoming.
NASA reportedly sent a twenty-page letter to Spielberg, before he completed his film, telling him that it would be “dangerous” to release it.
Many of the ideas for Close Encounters came from the USAF’s fabled Project Blue Book, one of a series of official US government investigations into the truth behind the rash of UFO sightings that began in the later stages of the Second World War and has persisted to this day.
The final conclusion of the Blue Book project, which officially ended on January 30, 1970, was that there were no actual extraterrestrial visitors and most, if not all, UFO sightings were hoaxes, or “misidentification of various conventional objects.”
That second explanation is almost definitely the case here, but several more recent sightings still defy conventional explanations.
