Google Maps users reckon ‘weird Amazon shacks’ are ‘Colombian drug camp’

A Google Maps sleuth reckons they have uncovered a drug processing camp deep in Coloia's Amazon rainforest.

A satellite image of Pana Pana in Guainia, Colombia shows several shelters in a remote clearing of forest close to the country's border with Brazil.

The purpose of the construction just a stone's throw from the Quebrada Mirapara river has been the subject of intense speculation in Reddit's Google Maps community.

As some suggest its location makes it highly likely to be linked to the processing of cocaine, others argue the coordinates could be for a small community in the rainforest.

The person responsible for sharing the screenshot captioned it saying: "Weird shacks in the middle of the Colombian Amazon (1.768000, -70.000000)"

One Reddit user, convinced that they were looking at evidence of an illegal operation, said: "It's Colombia, so there is an exceptionally high chance it is a drug processing camp. 1 way in and out, far out of the way."

Another however argued that police would have cracked down on the area if it was involved in drug processing.

They reckon it is more likely to be a site for "logging or mining or just an indigenous village".

They commented: "That would be quite exposed. Colombian police have access to G maps. Could be illegal logging or mining or just an indigenous village.

"I have been to several in the Colombian Amazon and they tend to clearcut/deforest the areas around the village cutting timber for homes and planting crops. Sometimes you have to go walking quite a ways to get back into the jungle."

A third appeared to favour the theory of the shelters belonging to remote villagers: "No airstrip, so probably just a primitive settlement. This doesn't appear to be within the boundaries of any uncontacted tribes in the area, but it's still a cool find!"

Previously in the same community, a remote facility in the US prompted Reddit users to question whether it could be a centre for alien research.

Some have speculated the facility could be an alien research centre for study of extraterrestrial beings, while others joked it could be the fictional illicit fast food chain Los Pollos Hermanos from TV series Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul.
