Google Maps users spooked by ’10-metre-long whale’ spotted lurking near coast

Google Earth users were left spooked after discovering what seems to be a 10.2 metre-long whale in satellite images off the coast of California.

The find went viral as Reddit fans enthused over the images captioned: "Looking at the west coast on Google Maps and found a whale!"

The sea beast, which is around 33 feet, is only a third of the size of a fully grown whale.

It was located at 38°37'39.6"N 123°23'33.3"W, which is close to Rocky Point, California on the West Coast of the USA.

Other Reddit users praised the find as they speculated over what species it could be. and other cracked jokes.

A user said: "That's definitely a blue whale. Distinctive shape and size."

Another added: "That a grey whale. 30ft long and close to the shore

A third joked: "Whale whale whale what do we have here."

A fourth commented: "That sounds super interesting. Whales in the sea, polar bears at the north pole, tigers in India, lions in Africa.."

It is believed the find which was posted to Reddit today (November 1) was reportedly found in 'satalite images taken in September 2018.'

The news comes after a Reddit user has shared a fascinating screenshot of a remote island taken from Google Maps, that looks just like Disney+ Star Wars’ character Grogu, aka Baby Yoda.

The screenshot, which was uploaded to a Reddit page dedicated to Google Maps, shows a green landmass that even seems to have the critter's ears.

As the author of the curious sighting captioned it “Baby Yoda Island”, other users seemed to have identified other animated characters, from Dumbo to Stitch.

Some of the 40,000 members in the group also saw Shrek, the green ogre from the movie and franchise of the same name, as well as a cow.
